It's a traditional Drawer Box... it could be used for switching in and out billets but there are better systems for that such as the CHAMELEON CHEST from Viking Mfg./Larry Becker and Steven's has an interesting piece I've yet to see but I've heard good things on http://www.stevensmagic.com/shopping/shopexd.asp?id=9665

As far as a Drawer Box goes, this one is kind of neat and might be a nice thing to have around for those special situations where you need switcher and nothing practical laying about... this could be readily used with Production fruit for an example or similar things that "appear" during a Seance or transmute...

As included in the Marvin's Magic set for four-year-olds, although it's bigger and rather more expensive........

Surely the principle is far too well known to the layman? I'd be more inclined to use a double envelope for billets, although for forcing I've usually used a clear change bag.

Oddly enough, I was using billets with a Z-fold this Saturday... for such an old well-known mechanism, I performed a wee miracle that none of the 'crowd' picked up on.

Suffice to say, lots of these older principles and mechanics are much overlooked these days, the 'change box' being one of them.

Mikame makes awesome stuff and just from the collector's point of view I'd love to get one of those... but then, I must feed my inner-pack rat from time to time or it begins to gnaw at my gut...
... Mikame has a larger "deeper" version of the same available through Stevens that don't look nearly as sweet as this one, but I've been contemplating the purchase for a while.

As to using a Z-Fold... why not? Harry Loraine became a legend using little more (if you don't have his treatise on the Himber I highly recommend it as well as Daniel Young's FROM THE OTHER SIDE)... you may want to look into the Z-styled Envelopes as well... I think it's a Piatt piece that you can obtain through Mier Yedid in the states.
