Hi

I was wondering if anyone out there could help? I've been asked to run a short magic workshop for kids 7-13 years old, and would like any advice as to the kind of tricks I could teach them.
I am thinking along the lines of them making the tricks themselves using simple materials, and then teaching them how to perform them.
I have a few ideas and have spent a good time remembering the first tricks I used to make when I was a youngster.
So any ideas for simple effects that might give them a taste for a great hobby/vocation!

regards,

Jeb Ho

Hi Nik

I think you should teach them some self working card tricks. This way they won't be put off by not being able to do any moves. Or some "Bet you can't" tricks. Anyway I hope it goes well whatever you do!!

Nik,

I think coin magic is the best way to get children interested in magic. A coin trick was the first trick I was taught and i have been interested ever since. It is simple and effective and should have the kids going wild.

The effect is the disappearence of a 50 pence piece. The performer holds the 50 pence piece in which ever hand they prefer perform some kind of magical motion and the 50p is gone.

I was about 12 when I was taught this trick so it might not be suitable for some of the age groups you are talking about.

Any way I think coin magic is the way to go.
I don't really want to post the secret to this trick here so if you want to know the secret e-mail me at:

jj.e.martin@btinternet.com ,

All the best in whatever you decide to do.

John

There is a section in "Mark Wilson's Complete Course in Magic" book which covers making stage props and gimmicks.
I think that if you used this book as a complete guide for the whole tutorial, you wouldn't go far wrong.
This would also allow the more serious of the students to continue their learning at home if they buy the book for themselves.
Ask Abrakazam for it or try at Amazon.com.
If you have trouble then mail me and I'll get the ISBN number for you.

Ignore the last message I just had another look the big book has far more in it I skimmed it when they both arrived and thought that they were the same so have been reading the small book which is juat a subset of the bigger book so I guess I would reccomend the big book especially as it has 33 things in it to make at home I guess you could do a lot with it teaching the kids

ISBN is:0-89471-623-9

I think a great trick to teach kids that will give them confidence b/c of the effect is the vanishing coin under a glass. I'm referring to the one where you cover the mouth of a glass with a piece of paper, then place a coin on a paper of the same color, so that when the glass is placed over the coin, it seems to vanish. I use this trick on adults, and I'm always amazed at how impressed they are with it. This is something that a child could perform easily, and feel very good about themselves because of the great reaction it usually gets.

15 year old from ny. as some1 said above self working card tricks are definitly a way to get children hooked. I can say from expirience =) i was about 7 and it fasinated me and now every trick i see increases m y knowledge and ambition. that is why i am trying to access the members area at this site. I am young but i am also beginning to be very knowledable about magic. self working tricks are good to start and the true magicians of the group will continue on for the harder illusion tricks. thank you

Hi Justin (notagambler), please take notice of the following...

This Has been said many times before and was also clearly printed when you first signed up to this forum!!!!!!!!

To prevent laymen (Jo Public who know nothing about magic) gaining entry to the magicians only section there is a sort of barrier.

I do not doubt you as a true magician and I am sure that the people who run the site beleive you as well, but you still have to go through the filtering process like everyone else.

You have to write a review or something and send it to the magicians who run the site and then at the end, make sure you ask if you can have access granted to your username and password into the 'magicians only section' (think of it as a barrier being lifted). This proves that you are a true magician and not a layman trying to get all of our secrets. The address to send your review/ summary of your magical knowledge to is access@magictrickshow.com . Make sure you ask for access to the 'magicians only section' when you send your review.

They are actually very busy at the minute and are inundated with timewasting questions which you can acctually find the answers to elsewhere on the site!

So take my advise, get on with that review for now and try to tell the other people who want access to the 'magicians only' section exactly what I have told you.

Good Luck, I hope you get in soon.

Daniel Graham

I think you should teach them some mental card tricks. What would be great are card tricks that require 2 people. The 2 kids can help work with each other, use their brains together, and also interact with each other. Fun with the kids, fun for the audience, and fun for everyone!
