cigarette through coin - how to refit

Postby Swami » Feb 27th, '08, 00:49

Hello
I'm a mentalist but love this old cigarette through coin and whilst at the convention in Blackpool this weekend managed to get a second hand freebie from a mate. However, he supplied it with plenty of the bits, but can anyone PM or email me on the best way to get a new one on? I don't know the protocols in describing effects here so I've kept it vague, but if you own the trick you know what I mean. Snapped and I need to put a new one on - I have plenty of new ones I just can't get them on.
Out of interest I also purchased the best thread ever for UFO and saw WOW demo'd to much applause - nice idea. I also bought one of the limited edition (500) Mark Raffles Secrets of Pick Pocketing, so was well chuffed. Also - I can now muscle pass! I'll never use it, but with the right teacher and the practice - it is possible!
Please pm me or email chris@ukbumpkeys.com regarding this coin issue if you can help
thanks

Soak in lighter fluid for a while. Use a small blunt knife or similar to prize off the lower part of the back. Clean off the glue (simply scrape it, the lighter fluid will have softened it nicely). Allow to dry. Put on TWO new 'things' (that way, if one breaks it can still be used until you get home to repair). Small drop of EvoStik on the lower 'bit', put back in main 'bit', line up as best as possible. Place somewhere safe (with weight on top if poss) and leave for at least 24hrs to set. Job done.

Hope that helps.

Hello
Thanks for your assistance - but I think I may have an older/different model, as it doesn't look stuck on, it looks welded. I did nearly manage to squeeze one round the 'edge' as it weere, but it wouldn't go all the way. Maybe it will come off shortly and I'll thank you again!

Soak it in lighter fluid for a bit, I bet you can prize it off with a knife then!

Don't forgot to clean out the old 'thing' from the grooves before putting new ones on - when they get old and manky they can be real stubborn swines to shift!

You are dealing with a classic "Johnson" mount with the tiny springs, etc. When I first read this I thought you were dealing with the one that used the rubber band akin to a folding coin.

I believe that is just solder which can be loosened using a normal soldering iron and the appropriate glazes you may need for creating adhesion... you could also use one of the small "hobby" sized welding torches but I do not believe that wise... too easy to make things too hot and thus, ruin the whole lot.

The one time I needed a repair on mine I just had a jeweler friend do it... far safer in the hands of experience when it comes to such fine things, than in mine... I'm all thumbs, truth be known.

super glue is quite brittle on metal and some of the cheaper brands may not stick metal to metal very well, if at all - EvoStik is the best to use for this sort of thing.

I used super glue to repair mine and now the bally thing won't work! It's all stuck together. I take it that soaking in lighter fluid is better than warm water to prise it apart again?

Hello
I used contact evo and it's fine - it;s not a trick I'd use - I just reraslly like the craftsmanship - it seems the reg trhing to do to use two bands as well.
While I'm here - may I ask, anyone familiar with the it UFO trick? I've got it to go anti clockwise round my whole body and catch it with my right hand - I'll try and make a vid - when I have, I'll post it
cheers

Never used the UFO trick, but there is a similar kind of effect in the Tarbell books which I made using some IT, Rubber Cement and a couple of old cards. It worked well enough.

Sounds good
I got the IT at the blackpool convention - about 100 meteres of 10 thickness if you know what I mean, you peel off one in ten - a lifetimes - it has about 3 inches give at a meter which makes it ideal for this too. Magicians wax - cool - used well it doesn't mark credit cards, or business cards, and then a rig built round an earing - get it - it's clean as hell - you arrrive at the table - have someone hand you THEIR credit/business card and your ready to go. A couple of 'boomerangs' blows their mind, then hands above alnd below which guide it - then for the finale, the card goes 360 round you thrown from the right hand anti clockwise and caught with the left too - I love it - then you just hand the card back. hygiens is bliss!
