My video - please criticise me

Postby queen of clubs » Mar 1st, '08, 18:23

I put a video on YouTube of some close-up card sleights so I thought I'd ask for tips or criticisms - anyone welcome to comment, good or bad, I can handle it :)

Basically it's a short trick involving a blue deck and a single red card, and the second half is just some ACR practice while the camera was still rolling. It's not meant as a "performance" or "presentation", just me practicing.

I know that there is a tiny flash at 0:55 for those who know what to look for, and I've already learned from that :)

Please let me know what you think.

CLICKETY-CLICK

PS - I know there are lots of poor quality kiddie magic vids on YouTube and it annoys people because it ruins the effects, which is why I never name my videos in ways that make them easily searchable. They're really just put up there to show friends and family and don't get many hits at all. Just thought I'd point that out before someone thinks "Here we go, another amateur idiot with YouTube magic..."

I believe this trick is the chicago opener.
Nice handling but you should add some patter.

Thanks!

I have the RRTCM book and DVD with R Paul Wilson already. You're right, it is an excellent resource.

You have an excellent pass, if a bit rushed.

I would slow down the action- think of it from a layperson't perspective, a card just changed color and identity. It's amazing. Why rush it?

The spin near the end is unnecessary- it doesn't add to the effect and is actually a bit distracting. I would get rid of it.

Overall, it seems very good.

Currently Reading "House of Mystery" (Abbott, Teller), Tarbell, Everything I can on busking

Nice to see another lefty like me. ;)

That was very slick. Nice, flowing style and your handling is smooth and pleasant to watch. Your pass is superb. No major faults that I could see. Keep up the practice, that was impressive.

Yes, nice magic videos but the obsessions with Russell Brand and George Galloway have set off alarm bells. A great magic feat would be to make those two disappear.

I agree with his Lordship. But the card stuff is good.

Well, I like his retorts to Barrymore when he was on Celeb Big Brother...and he was pals with Saddam...so he isn't all that bad.

Thanks for your comments everyone! I was on top of the world to hear that my pass is "excellent" and "superb".

As for the rest of my YouTube vids - they're neither here nor there, surely? I am a fan of Russell Brand and I am a friend of George Galloway, but on this forum I am an aspiring card magician only. Let's not let politics get in the way, I wouldn't want to get into arguments so soon after finding this place!!

And he was not pals with Saddam - you've been reading too many right-wing newspapers. You can take that up with me privately if you like. Be warned though, my debating skills are on a par with my pass.

Love and respect!

I met Saddam once and found he to be a lovely fellow. Nice to hang around with.

Your pass is very good, I agree.

Bit of cold reading here, but are you by any chance a student?

I am not a student, sorry. You must have been channelling someone else.

Heres a bit of cold reading of my own. Are you, by any chance, a sarcastic git with whom many a light-hearted rhetorical one-upmanship will be exchanged in the coming months? :D

I certainly hope so.

Care to comment on the video I posted, Mark?

This delving into my other interests is rather pointless, since I didn't come here to debate Socialism, I came here as an eager, amateur card magician.

Have a go at me in the off-topic section, for sure, and we'll have a lovely debate. But c'mon, I didn't expect the Spanish Inquisition when I just posted one of my card vids ;)
