Yes indeed, my dearest wish would be that folks check previous threads via Search functions before posting as it would save so much time and space.

Thinking about things a little more, it's not my actual very dearest wish, that's probably got more to do with nubile wenches, wet Tee shirts and chocolate flavoured whipped cream but I'm realistic enough to know I ain't gonna get everything.....

Too true mate. I'm nearly always forced to settle for boring old ordinary flavour cream.

The overall impression I get from this thread is that a single difficulty rating is inappropriate for this product. It would appear that there should really be two difficulty ratings.

To enjoy - 1/5
To imitate - 5/5

I'm afraid I must disagree. I have watched DBP a number of times now, and am using little bits and pieces. However, the first couple of watches, I didn't go near my deck of cards (which WAS difficult), but I simply watched in awe. For me it has to be

To enjoy 10/10
To imitate 10/10

It's a must have for anyone serious about their card magic/mentalism with cards.

No, you don't. :)

I think you missed the point that my previous post was about difficulty ratings. A difficulty rating of 10/10 for enjoyment would mean that only an expert magician could possibly enjoy it.

Devil's Picture Book is one of three items on my wishlist at the moment (i.e. items I plan to buy but haven't yet). Of the other two, one's the Spongeball Toolbox and the other's a performance video of a very famous magician that I don't want to name until after I've bought it because there are only a handful of copies available on Amazon and I don't want to accidentally start a rush on it before I get around to my purchase.

At this stage I'm thinking I'll get the videos shortly after Easter and save the Toolbox for later in the year - I like to spread things out a bit.

Chocolate flavour, eh. You kinky fing, you... ;)

Back on topic, there's a lot in DPB, and coming to card magic late, I tend to get sidetracked thinking how I can adapt everything to my, um, "differently able" card skills rather than absorbing what's on screen.

I have now acquired a copy of Devil's Picture Book, and what's more, I've watched it twice. I liked the invisible deal routine without any special decks, but on the other hand I really did not like the "backwards" version, as I thought the method was blatantly obvious at every step.

Most of the psychological forces also seemed obvious to me, but they inspired me to invent a psychological force of my own for the three of clubs, based on the same principles. This failed completely when I tested it yesterday, but it was fun to try, and I'll try again sometime. (Should I describe my script?)

I found the overwhelming majority of the video to be highly enjoyable, and it left me wanting more. And the routine with the one-way forcing deck shows how presentation can transform any tool into something wonderful.

Well, I received my copy recently (fifteen days from order to delivery - not bad) and I've watched it a few times over the past week or so.

I think it's rubbish.

Only joking. This is great and worth the money for the entertainment value alone. I love the Invisible Deal routine and plucked up the courage to try it on my dad yesterday. To my utter amazement, it actually worked. I don't know who was more gobsmacked, me or him. And Derren's OOTW is superb. In fact, I enjoyed all the effects on this DVD; much of it I will have to adapt if I am to have any hope of performing it, but this is great stuff.

I am a bit surprised you found the methods obvious especially since some of the methods involves a bit of smoke - even from Derren's side ;-)
Did you really buy the 3 of clubs or 4 of club thing? Derren is very screwed, but notice that Derren is NOT releasing his special techniques and methods for creating recorded video mentalism as we have seen on television.
