Need some luck on a renovation

Postby Adrian Morgan » Mar 27th, '08, 08:00

I'm having my kitchen renovated in the near future, and I've selected a benchtop colour that is exactly what I want. Sadly, that colour has been discontinued, and nothing similar is available. However, they managed to find a leftover piece for me in the factory - the very last piece of that colour in Australia, and probably the world.

I've been given all sorts of warnings about using leftover stock from a discontinued colour - how there's a risk of it cracking if it's dried out, etc, etc - but I WANT THAT COLOUR, so it had better not go wrong. I know what I want my kitchen to look like, and don't want to settle for anything else because that would take away the sense of art and the dream of having a house styled after my own tastes. I resent manufacturers who produce a limited range and therefore restrict MY choices. I should be able to have whatever colour I like; not just something that happens to be fashionable at the time.

I will be more than a little annoyed if something goes wrong and I can't have my colour, so please send me some good luck. (It's a shade of dark green, by the way.)

You might want to load up on horseshoes and four-leaf clovers. A couple of rabbit feet wouldn't go wrong either. :D

Thank you.

Many of the colours of my home can be seen in the picture below. The kitchen is the green room on the top right, and absolutely requires dark green bench tops.

The room on the top left is the bedroom. With its purple walls and orangey-peach architraves etc, it is about as close to pinkness as I can get while remaining true to my personality. I am this pink, but no pinker.

That's quite a technicolor house you have there. :D

Can a paint shop not create the colour? I know if I take a sample of the colour I want I can go to Lowes (a do it yourself type store) and they can scan the colour and they make it for me on the spot. I can bring in the colour on anything a drape, box, an old piece of wall, my neigbour brought in a painting because the colour she wanted was in the painting. All they do is run the scanner over it the computer calculates the quantities of the primary's, The put a can of base colour under a machine and the machine spits out the right amount of each primary, shakes it all up in a funky little machine then they pull out a sample let it dry and if they come up with the same colour (and so far they have each time) I pay an ungodly amount of money and presto, honest to god magic!

No, because it's got nothing to do with paint. You don't paint benchtops; you laminate them.

This is probably a hair-brained scheme, but could you import some from outside the country. There can't a zero amount of that laminate. You could try a foreign company and see if they'll ship you the laminate.

Oh, I'm sure there'd be a solution given an unlimited supply of money ...

[Edit: Unless I decide to take it to PM, that's my last word on the practicality of any solution. To say more would require giving details about the financial and other arrangements I've made regarding the kitchen, and I don't think that would be very interesting to the group.]

Just a thought. It's not that expensive as it seems.

An update on this: the pull-out of the old kitchen took place today, and the new one will be installed tomorrow.

I am currently staying at my parents' place in order to avoid the chaos and obtain better meals. I'll be here for a few days even though the installation is expected to be complete by tomorrow evening, because of the pragmatics about when to go home. When I *do* get back, there'll be pictures.

The installation and everything is being done by Uzit. If you look at their website, you'll notice that they have a slogan which cannot possibly be read in such a way as to contain any sort of innuendo whatsoever.

You're right, I'm finding it hard to see any innuendo in "Quality, custom-built kitchens, wardrobes, laundrys from a trusted South Australian company." :?

It's all done now. Below is a photograph of the benchtop colour I was talking about. A question for the Lady of Mystery: your fairy was kind to me, so please instruct me on the correct way to pay tribute. Should I leave a glass of whisky out overnight, perhaps?

You can read more about the renovation on my blog.

She's more of a cider drinker, that one. oh and leave her a yummy cake. But make sure it's low fat, she's got to watch her waist line otherwise she'll end up looking like Mavis Cruet.
