What do you do when/if...

Postby Dikobraz » Apr 7th, '08, 16:55

... the specs ask you: "Wait a minute! Let me see the top card!" (e.g. you've done rub-a-dub-dub and that happens...)
I got in a quite embarrassing situation the other day....

Or, as Christian says, these people are the one you have to run away from? :D

Run and hide. :D

You could say "Trust me, I trick people for a living" if you wanted to be funny.

Or possibly just say, "Do you want to ruin the magic?" if you want the spec to look like an a**.

Fully reconsider the routine and misdirection surrounding the move.

There'll be a way to stop the spectator pointing out their suspicions, but only you can stumble upon the solution. You may have to add an extra part to the routine, you may have to take a bit out. It's probably worth doing a few self-working effects before attempting any sleights - that way, the spectator will get bored of looking for funny hand movements, allowing you to do as you wish.

Many options for you there are.

Unfortunately you do occasionally get the odd jerk who once started to learn card magic so he knows the DL, but didn't have the patience to keep going and instead uses his shred of knowledge to ruin it for those that did... you certainly want to avoid those types!

But as you mention it for the rub-a-dub vanish, this is always routined to be followed by something, however good yours is it really isn't an "ending move", so you just need to think about the structure of the effect, do the vanish and then quickly get them focused on the next thing.

As Farlsborough said - think about a way to progress the effect beyond the rub-a-dub being the finish.

As an alternative - there's nothing that says you can't just do another DL to show another indifferent card.

The simple answer to this is ....

The DL done properly. It will never be seen.

If the rub-a-dub doo-dah is the climax to the trick, simply do the change, then toss the revealed card onto the table in the motion of down-turning your palm, and immediately but casually swing-cut the deck.

I had a routine where I would "find" the four aces by elaborately cutting the deck, and the final ace would be deliberately wrong, then I'd do a similar colour change to reveal the ace, and do exactly what I described above. If you're casual about it you will have swing-cut the deck long before they ask to see the second card.

I agree with the queen of clubs, just do a one handed cut with a bit of misdirection.

I'd work on the routine a little bit more. I always try to start and finish a routine cleanly or as clean as possible. If you can keep the flow going between the various part of the trick, there shouldn't really be any chance for a spec to say 'hang on a minute'

Don't forget that a Double is not only to show where a card (apparently) is but also where a card isn't. I agree that you should go straight into another section of the routine, perhaps showing that the top card isn't theirs & then making it appear from somewhere else.

Spec " Let me see the top card "

Performer " ok sure, just let me see you penis first "

guarantees a laugh and the spec will shut up.

Or you could do the KM move from a a d/l position.
