Tripped out ACR

Postby queen of clubs » Apr 27th, '08, 20:13

I was watching Shawn Farquar's "Shape of My Heart" presentation, which I absolutely adore, and I wanted to do something similar to some chilled out music.

I'm nowhere near as fantastic as that guy, so I opted for a bit of a slow-motion ACR put to some trippy, chill-out music.

If you've just had 3 cups of coffee, you'll hate this - I made it very much with the word "mellow" in mind.

Any and all criticisms welcome. I know it's not perfect, and I've been criticising myself over it. Especially the card switch at the end which I perform poorly, but what the heck...

Hit that reefer, hold it in... then CLICK

Very, very good, slick handling, great magical gestures. just one complaint with your EC, try not to make it look like you're jogging the top card forward, because it looks strange when the revealed card is flush with the others, if that makes sense. I see so many people do this.

EDIT: I remember Mark Lewis once talking about it.

here

mark lewis wrote:I have been doing that Erdnase thing for years and I have made what I consider an improvement. I have never liked the standard thing of outjogging the card and I think it looks highly suspicious and unnatural. I have therefore decided in my great wisdom to bevel the deck inwardly (not outwardly as you may be tempted to do) so that when the card is pushed out it doesn't look like it. I am afraid I have no idea how to describe it so you will all have go through the rest of your lives not knowing how to do it.

lol tom i saw the same thing and was gonna make a similar remark!

The EC require you to move the card forward of around 1 cm only, but if you close your finger on top of it for the second it takes to do then reopen the finger so everyone see the card still there.

then close fingers again and reopen using the same delay and the card has changed without moving from its original position. At least with the right tempo no one should notice the card moved forward slightly.

As for the rest the routine was classic, could even be improvised to suit the situations like most ACR, all the moves are neat as usual. I cant stop to gratz your work, keep on training its worth it and it does encourage lots of Hobbyist and magicians to train harder.
Me included, sometimes i wonder if all those hours are worth but when i see someone else with good technics, i know it worth the time.

I like that, very mesmerising - I don't smoke the naughty stuff but a tumbler full of single malt and a session with the old narghile will do just as well!

Do you know the Cold Cut by Shaun McCree? I think you'd really like it. It's a slightly flourishy one handed cut in which you can remove one card, a bit like the hot shot cut but neater and without the airborne quality. What it lacks in flying cards it makes up for in the fact that it can be used to extract a perfectly aligned double, making it incredibly useful!

(Edit: the temptation to write "you can see an example of it HERE" and slap a Rick Roll down was great but I resisted :) )

That was pretty good. I was very impressed with the cover pass. The last sleight - the switch thing (I have no idea what the name is) - needs some work.

Filming-wise, for your next video, try not to do it whilst sitting down with your legs crossed. Make it a bit more professional with a close up pad, or try and angle the camera so that's it's possible to cut out the legs and feet using editing software.

Edit: I just read your first post about your last sleight. At least you know :-)

Very enjoyable routine, queen of clubs.

Regarding the Erdnase Change, you'll find it in Card College (Volume 3, page 744). You don't want to slide your hand forward, it is a "tell" that should be avoided like the plague.

Now, I don't know what kind of ground breaking work Lewis has done to it, but if you follow the Card College instruction, you'll find that it will make your change 100% better - you'll get rid of that forward motion which is a give away as to the method of the change.

If you don't have Card College, drop me a PM and I'll explain the thing that you can do to make your EC much, much better.

Aside from that and the advice above, you've got a winner of a routine. Very magical and entertaining as well as visual. Good stuff!

Mike.

That was one of the nicest ACR's that I've seen in a while, nicely paced and good music that didn't detract from what you were doing.

Great stuff!

what was the music by the way queenie? sounded like soundgarden doing a bad impression of early black sabbath...

anyway...you know whose work i think you'd enjoy - both sleight and effects wise? lewis jones...get seventh heaven...its mightily good...

anyway, yeah - nice one missus, makes a change from the usual "and i snap my fingers and it travels to the top" kinda acr... :D

The song is Planet Caravan - an early black Sabbath number but I'm not sure who is singing this version.

Think thats Pantera's version of Planet Caravan isnt it?

Loved the routine, it has inspired me to put together an ACR, very smooth pass!

With regards to the EC, I curl my index finger up around the front of the deck, you then jog the card to be changed forwards leaving the finger showing, it's another little convincer to show the card hasn't been jogged forwards. This combined with sufficient cover will lead to an excellent EC.

Just a thought.
