Ok so I'm a bit of a fan of the Grand Theft Auto series of computer games and San Andreas consumed 80 hours of my life in the first couple of weeks that I owned it, which is a terrible amount of time to spend on a bloody console and is something I've never even come close to with any game before or since. With that in mind I've been very eagerly awaiting the release of number four, in fact the main reason I bought a PS3 last year was to be up and running ready for it's release in October.
Unfortunately as many of you will know it was delayed until yesterday and frankly I'd convinced myself that it wouldn't be a good idea to get it immediately. I've got a lot of stuff going on at the mo that needs my at least partial attention and is certainly more important than the latest virtual driving and shooting fest so I decided against preordering and let my better judgement prevail.
Imagine then my surprise when I walked past a shop yesterday that still had copies left for sale at 3pm! This anomaly had to be investigated so I went in and had a look on the shelves. Yes, there it was, not yet sold out. How peculiar. I took a box up to the counter and enquired with wrinkled brow how this could be the case, I was informed that they simply hadn't sold all their available units yet. Further perplexed I asked if in a hypothetical scenario I was to hand them money they would relinquish ownership of said game to me? Again the answer was positive but I was very unsure and thought the only way to test their claims would be to hand over some currency. This I did and sat back with the smug grin of one who has found his theory to be true only to be yet more astonished when said game was presented to me in a handy carrier bag.
Of course at this juncture my only option was to get swiftly home, shut the curtains, turn off my phone and bring tea making facilities into the lounge before turning my eyes square. I won't go into too much detail about the wonders of the game, I want those of you who've not yet got it to be pleasantly surprised. But I have to mention there's a magic show! Early on I got the phone number of a lady (you have your own in game cell phone) and gave her a buzz. We went out for some bowling and on the next date I whisked her to a cabaret club where a magician did a decidedly ropey levitation of his assistant, but it was still my favourite thing in my favourite game. Can't get any better really.
Also the game world is interlinked by media, I heard an interview with what sounded like Ricky Gervais on the in car radio but thought nothing of it. Later on back at my digs I flicked on the tv to see him doing five minutes of material on one of the channels! It then mentioned that he could be seen at a comedy club down the road, so I nipped up there. On the way I stopped at an internet cafe to check out a ringtone ad I'd seen on the same channel and logged on to the game's own internet to by a new tone for my virtual mobile. I reckon that's only the beginning too, here's to a few sleepless nights.....
