My first coin routine

Postby Ian The Magic-Ian » May 15th, '08, 01:16

Four Coin Routine, I don't have patter, I like my magic to speak for itself, so I have an original song on it written and performed by my brother. Enjoy! http://www.magicvideodepot.com/main/members/action/viewvideo/8367/Four_Coins/

Barton: Have you read the Bible, Pete?
Pete: Holy Bible?
Barton: Yeah.
Pete: Yeah, I think so. Anyway, I've heard about it.

Okay please take this as constructive criticism.

1.) I think your hands look incredibly unnatural. Now I'm no expert on coins, but throughout the whole routine they seemed to be trying too hard to prove their "emptiness."

2.) In the beginning I was really confused. I think patter would work in the routine, because it seemed like you were just dropping coins and picking them up.

3.) When you "transported" the coins, you do anything to show that it wasn't just another coin. I think a layman would see through the technique.

The routine was good, I just think it could use a little working on. And plus, it's your first coin routine.

I was wondering how the first part would've looked without patter... but I don't like talking that much on videos.

You dont have to register. You have to go to videos > browse videos > then scroll through to find Ian's.

Yes I think you should definately introduce patter into that routine, even for the video. Unless your bloody amazing, patter is a big part of the misdirection, and as there wasnt much misdirection built into the routine, it was quite easy to spot some things.

It did look from this video that coins were just bein dropped onto the table as opposed to apearing magically.

Dont get me wrong, its not bad and for a first vid, congrats.. i just think that you need to re-sctructure it slightly so that perhaps only one coin just appears on the table, another is plucked from the air, one from you sleeve, and one split from another coin... something like that.

And to introduce patter so your audience is kept interested throughout and understands whats 'supposed' to be happening.

What they said. I wouldn't be able to tell you what the effect of the routine was, and it did look as if you just kept dropping coins on the table. Mind you the flash four coin finish was lovely.

As above, but also you flashed CP a couple of times.
Dont have the hand so tense, but you can easily work on that!

You already know you have to work on your handling and that will come with time and practice. I see most of the comments are to work on your patter and presentation and that is correct. There was a comment that it just looked like you were dropping coins. To be honest I didn't see the magic the first time, I watched it three times to figure out what it is you were trying to accomplish. I think I finally figured it out. In your presentation you have to define the magic and I'm pretty sure that was missing except in the final move which was very nice. It was very clear that there were coins in different locations and then suddenly they all appeared in one place. Prior to that nothing was really that clear. You can correct that with presentation. But your first time with an element you are not comfortable with, you did pretty good. Keep up the good work.
