Stage Magic Suggestions?

Postby VoodooMick » May 12th, '08, 13:16

I have a competition coming up in a Bar/Club and am wondering what suggestions anyone might have for a stage magic effect under the most difficult conditions...
It has to be angleproof as there will be people watching from backstage, the stage itself is a good 3 feet off the ground so underneath angles are dodgy also.
The crowd are drunk and are mostly more interested in copping off with someone and/or dancing.. lets just say they are not there specifically for magic, this is not a magic competition it's a talent competition.
It's in 3 weeks.
I drew in heat 2, which gets me through to the heat finals. Which I am delighted about. But it was really by the skin of my teeth as I did psychic card tricks. And it was a fight to keep them interested. The person I drew with was a male cross dressing punk rocker in full make up doing Sex Pistols covers.
At the heat finals I'll definitely be up against some drag queens. The competition is called Drag Idol although it is open to anyone.
Hey it's a stage and they'll have me and it's character building.
But I aint wearing no frock. Not yet anyway.

There is a rope trick in MWCCIM where you pull 2 peices of rope thru a spec.
Its angle proof and dressed up properly (patter about how dangerous etc. just sorta milking the thing I guess??) would do well (Its P*sh-easy)
Since its a club you could also get the ropes to be weird trippy glow in te dark colours?

How about you introduce your act and say "If you don't like my performance, at the end I'll disappear with a poof". If you have a decent rapport with the audience they'll probably like that, but I wouldn't advise it if they're cold to you, because it could be seen as a bit homophobic, or transphobic, or whatever.

I'd definitely say something like that, but then again I have a few gay friends and like to go to gay/les bars so maybe I have a license to. Hehe...

This pretty much begs for Prof Cheer Comedy Rope Trick.

The Pom-Pom Prayer Stick, except refer to them as balls instead of pom-poms.

Absolutely angle-proof, and an amazing trick. I waited seven years between being amazed by Ali Bongo's presentation of this on kids' TV and buying one from Alan Alan.

There's also plenty of room for risqué humour.

I think ropes work really well on stage, and if done carefully can be pretty angle proof. I don't tend to worry about what people backstage see, there're always going to be people hanging around backstage but most of the time they're not really interested in what you're doing.

I do a variation on Tabary's 3 Rope Routine which usually goes down well. The rope through body is a nice one too. I present it as a demonstration of a witch trial they used to do in Hungary, where the suspected witch would have a couple of ropes tied around her neck and the other ends tied to horses. The horses would gallop off in opposite directions, pulling the rope. If she wasn't a witch, the rope would decapitate her, if she was a witch she'd survive. I know it sounds quite gorey but presented in a light hearted manner it's quite good fun.

Thank you for your responses :)
I have decided to do a modified Andy Nyman Graphology routine from his "Short, Punchy & Mental" which will hopefully give plenty of opportunity for masses of innuendo and achieve loads of audience interaction.
But I really appreciate the feedback and, as I intend to perform on more than one occasion in these conditions, I now have plenty of ideas for the future :)
Fanx once again :)
