Mirage Deck, Is It Worth It?

Postby TheMaskedMagician » May 18th, '08, 15:55

Hey Guys,

Registered here a while back but due to exams and revision and all that, I haven't had much time to get back into doing tricks. Well, there all over now more or less, so I'm back and I here about this "Mirage Deck" and gather it's somewhat like a svengali pack which my and a m8 had very good routines on. If you can tell me the affect then that would be great.

I'm the type of guy who wants to work with gimmicks rather than everyday normal objects. The Penetration Frame where an object goes through glass is one of my favorite as I've handed the glass out and it's been examined for a good few minutes before the group I'd shown it to finally conceded they were baffled.

So if you know any such as that where a gimmick is near impossible to spot even after close examination, suggest away.

A quick search (don't foget to use the "search for all terms" option) reveals a couple of useful threads:

Read all the thread, in particular the last page of posts.

I'd say that, if you're looking for new items, the Mirage Deck is a bit too similar to what you've already got to be really useful. I might be wrong, but I suspect you'll be a bit disappointed, not because it's not a useful prop, but because you'll find it so very similar to something you already know.

I am sure that the trick has a name but I do not know it. It is a close-up and involves a regular box of matches and some sort of spike, perhaps a cocktail stick or another match. The stick/spike clearly is pushed through the middle of the large face of the matchbox by one observer, while held by someone else. When the holder opens the matchbox they find a solid and heavy gold piece of metal.

So far, cross fingers, I have been able to hand out box, stick/spike and metal block without problems

Nah, although I did have that one although one spectator *DISASTER* noticed the gimmick, but up until then I always had the spectator give me a pen or whatever just to ensure it was normal.

That is called Matchbox Block or Matchbox Penetration (probably known by other names, too). Gimmicks vary in quality depending on which version you get, so it's a bit of a gamble.

I am sure that you are right and perhaps I struck lucky first time. However, routine 'maintenance' will assist.

Not that this has any significance. The plastic penetration frame was the first effect I ever performed. Now 40ish something years later I'm always pleasantly suprised that it still fascinates people. Every once in a while while going through my box o' "junk" i pull it out and leave it somewhere in the house. And some innocent guest will pick it up and start playing with this and eventually ask me what it is. And voila.

I love the plastic penetration frame. I vaguely recall seeing a very nice version made in wood with a real pane of glass. Anyone know what I'm on about?

There was one in wood. I'm not sure who made it, could have been supreme magic. There was also one made in brass but the wooden was so much nicer. But the platic is just so unasuming.
