There are laws to do with having a DJ license, but never came up when I Djed, so never investigated in case it meant giving up large amounts of money.

Sadly I have to charge VAT as I turn over enough to make Customs and Excise sit up and take note :(

You cannot charge VAT unless you are VAT registered - you can register voluntarily if your taxable turnover is under £61000 per year. If your taxable turnover is over £61000 per year then registration is compulsory.

As for laws regarding a DJ, there are none - but there are laws, bylaws and regualtions that you need to be aware of.

You can voluntarily register for VAT if you're not turning over £40k+, but in my experience, it's more hassle than it's worth, having done it for my video production company.

But you're correct - if you're not VAT registered, you can't legally add VAT to your charges.

Performers of whatever kind earning more than about £15k in any quarter should keep an eye on the VAT story. One quarter over the top potentially brings you into the VAT registration net, although subsequent events could let you out again.
