Stage magic advice

Postby taffy » Jun 12th, '08, 20:02

Hi guys. I am looking for some advice and tips from some of the stage magicians / performers here on Talk Magic.

I am a professional close up magician and have been for several years, however I have been given first refusal by a repeat customer of mine to perform some stage magic!

Now, as I said I have never been into or performed stage magic before and informed my client of this! My client replied by saying that they have been so impressed with the quality and service I have provided over the years that they would like me to conder this idea!

The offer is a very generous and one and only comes along once in a life time, fortunately I have time on my side (I think?) as the show will not start until the beginning of next year!

Now I know there are a lot of experienced and/or professional stage magicians here on this forum including my good friend Mark Waddington, I am hoping you can offer me any advice, hints, tips, effects, anything really that can help me in any way shape or form.

At present all I know is that they are looking for a 20 minute show, with a story attached to it. The stage is 30 x 20 foot.

As I said I am no stranger to magic, and have even had several years of experience working as an entertainer / compere on stage, so I know my way around the stage and presentation etc, its just the magic!

What magic is strong for entertaining family stage magic?

Cheers guys, I'm going to stop waffling now!

The strongest reaction I get (kids show with some parents, older siblings present) is the Needle Through Balloon trick. Even stopped a few teenagers, who are obviously too cool for "magic", nattering and held their attention for a few minutes the other day at a six year old's birthday party.

Big enough to play on the stage also.

Best of luck in your endeavours.

Craig,

Get yourself Mel Mellors DVDs from RSVP magic. Theres some fantastic pack small play big effects, and his lines are diamond, I bought the DVDs purely for the comedy.

Ill give you a call in a day or two and we can have a jam.

Well, what kinda of stage magic you want to do?

are you looking for stage magic that involves little props like silks, balls, balloons, etc. ?
or something more "serious" like animals and vanishing objects and appearing things?

The one thing for stage that i must say is one of the best i have performed and still performing is Cardiographic. *Signature Edition.
It may be a bit pricy but definately worth the reactions. Especially when performed with great comedy.

Ill tell you a bit more once i remember everything i used to do when i started out.
