Barton: Have you read the Bible, Pete?
Pete: Holy Bible?
Barton: Yeah.
Pete: Yeah, I think so. Anyway, I've heard about it.

It's all based on how the brain puts images together.

At a distance, or squinting, you can't see fine detail, so you are forced to rely on blocks of shading. When you're close enough to make out sharp detail like lines, these take precedence in the brain. You're still seeing the shading, but ignoring it where it conflicts with the "edge" lines.

The same sort of thing happens in poor vision conditions (low light, or minus glasses), where a shadow can look like a solid object even if it falls across several surfaces. Improve conditions (e.g. put your glasses on) and edges take precedence over shadows.

Presumably this is why it evolved -- so we can make out objects even under various patterns of light and shade.
