Hi there,
I don't know the name of the effect, but I believe there is a review of it somewhere... Is THIS What you're thinking of?

Sorry I can't be more helpful.

James, 19, Lifelong student of magic and will carry on learning for the rest of my days if I'm a very lucky boy.

Considering Paul Gertner has been around for years, and Michael Kras' effect is brand new - I don't think that's the effect he's looking for. (Though, I do believe Mr. Kras' effect CAN do what he's looking for)

While I haven't seen either of the clips you mentioned - to me it sounds like a variation of Phil.

Here's a clip of the original effect:

In Phil it involves the performer "naming" the card. However, you can easily adapt this effect to do exactly what you're looking for.

There is a STANDARD and pretty obvious way to do this type of effect.
In what I call the standard way the magician shows that the cards have different backs while browsing through the cards face down. Different names can be seen on the back written in large clear bold letters. Done with 52 bicycle cards a slight restriction of choice (or mental force) is required.
Done with different brands of cards (i.e. not ordinary bicycle cards) the slight restriction of choice can be avoided. The method does not use rough and smooth cards.

I have constructed another related method where you can spread out the cards across the table so all the backs can be seen to be different. Again none of the cards are rough and smooth.

In both methods the magician does not come near the deck when the spectator remove the freely though of card (instructed not to look at the back).

I need to see the effect performed to check if the effect is based on that method or something entirely different. Maybe you could provide us with the link to the clip you referred to on YouTube

Magic is slight of mind!

I think Paul Harris has an effect out where the spectator's name is on the back of the card. If I remember correctly you flip through the back of the cards and a stick figure is seen to take out a deck of cards, remove one card it is the card the spectator also chose, and on the back of the card is the spectators name. Or something like that. Was that Cardtoon? or Cardtoon2, He has so much stuff out I can't remember what was what. My memory is really going bad quickly.

Paul Harris' effect is called Cardian Angel. Interesting trick, but slightly different from what was originally mentiond, I think.

I just watched a video to this trick. Now I don't know if it was because I only watched the penguin magic video to it, but it wasn't really shown that well. It just looked like you knew where to end up at, and you could easily tell from the start he was taking off more than one card.

But while I am here, I noticed that the Phil trick was mentioned. Now I have a card deck that is very similar to this and when I just found it to find out what it was called, I find it was called Phil Plus. (What a suprise, I should have guessed!). Now this deck is a great deck, because not only can you name the card they are thinking of. You can also tell them the card of the name they are thinking of. I have used it a few times and left people speechless.

It's not exactly a marketed trick, but it has been explained on one of Jay Sankeys DVD'S, I think 22 blows to the head, where instead of it being names, the selection says Yes on the back, and all the others say No on the back.
