Mentalism Inspired Images

Postby Mage Tyler » Jun 24th, '08, 06:29

Hey all,

These images, all variations on a theme, are something that I’ve been bouncing around for awhile and finally decided to sketch out. I created these in Photoshop 7; mostly by hand, but using public domain or royalty free imagery when I had to outsource.

Image................Image

Image................Image

Image................Image

The first set was the original idea, the second set a variation that might work best for some hypothetical organization or club, and the third set is a little deconstructed for use as maybe a badge or something similar.

Originally I thought about using them on some future website (i.e. if I ever decided to go semi-pro), but I think in the end the pentagram might be too suggestive of particular religions for commercial use (for some people anyway, and many of those in my area).

I look forward to any feedback, suggestions, or preferences between the versions you might have.

Many thanks,
-Tyler

(Sorry for the watermark, but I thought it might be necessary as the file sharing section is a public area)

You were right in using the watermark.

These are nice as the combine in some ways the pscientific with the esoteric. The first one would work well for a nice reading system in McBride and Burger's Mystery School...the image could be printed on a nice piece of card and then laminated.

Psycrets (http://www.psycrets.org.uk) opted for the Horus Eye for our badges, but these sorts of images that you developed are quite attractive.

I really really like them, especially the incoporated ESP symbols, really effective!

As one that's been around the block more than a few times I feel obliged to point out just how this sort of graphic can cost you gigs as well and very much limit the markets you work in... this is especially true for those in the U.S. market where you have more than a few right-winged Christian nut-cases that see the devil everywhere they look (and trust me... they do get organized really quick when it comes to picketing someone that holds to this sort of edge... I've lost a few gigs to such holy-rollers).

I love the idea and if you study Pendulum work you'll see where this pattern can be used there as well e.g. there are some legit ways of exploiting it, just be prepared.

they're nice, but too mystical for me...

if you just had the circle, with a triangle in the middle, followed by the eye within that - it may look sufficiently odd and logo like...

if you're interested in the usage of imagery in mentalism, have a read of kentonism...

i like the eye image alot...

perhaps the circle with the zenner symbols and the psi, but not the pentagram. Some combo of those would be more psientific. Rick Rothbart used the psi symbol on Reflections, which looks very good and 'experimental'...

DrTodd, Thanks for the links. Your mention of the card made me realize that it could also be used as a forcing circle (with a few more symbols added in). I think Sankey did something like it in Hemispheres with a clock. I don't own Mystery School but I've now added it to my list for sometime down the road.

Craig, I think you're right and why, in the end, I realized it wouldn't work very well in a commercial application. The concept of the pentagram came along because at some point I put together that a pentagram has 5 points and there were 5 Zenner symbols.

Abraxus, Thanks for the recommendation. I've seen that suggestion a few times and it's already on my list, however, I didn't know there was a lot of imagery in it.

I still like the idea of the pentagram; however, I think it does have some limitations as far as applications go. I'll give it some thought and see if I can replace it with some other symbols.

In the meantime, I'd appreciate any further thoughts anyone might have. Thanks again to those that have already commented.

Does anyone have any preferences between the Psi verison and the Eye version?

-Tyler

I was going to suggest adding a triangle to the five Zener symbols, then you could make it the Seal of Solomon (Star of David), but realised you might get accused of being a Zionist!

:)

Mr E. sells a specific forcing tool based on a five pointed star. It's fairly simple, but so what!

( ok, ill bite)
my point being, the vast majority of lays will stay away from things that they suspect is a bit dodgy.

you know, slough and windsor used to have a thriving magic club in the 50s, and 60s.
suddenly it dissapeared without trace.
the reason, as quite a number of people have told me, was its name.

nobody wanted to be involved with something that had the name...

"The wizards of the silver star", because it sounds like a cult.

These days 'Wizards of the Silver Star' would probably be classed as somewhat Harry Potter-ish rather than demonic.

Thank you all for your time and opinions.

Based on the feedback I've redesigned the images, switching the pentagram out for the star, and replacing it for the Psi. Obviously this wouldn't have worked for the images with the Psi in the center (as it would then be empty), so I've used the eye.

I'm hoping these come off as more psientific.

Apologies for the quality, I reworked them in their resized form rather than going back and reworking on the fullscale images.

I'd appreciate any further thoughts/opinions/feedback anyone might have.

Thanks again,
-Tyler
