Oz Perlmann lecture

Postby bronz » Oct 25th, '06, 19:07

Wellity wellity wellity, one of the most anticipated lectures of the year it seems. I saw Oz last night (25/10/06) at the Downtown Magic Club in Ashford. It was great.

I could leave it there but seeing as people always want details in reviews.... The magic that Oz performed and tipped was a mixture of cards and mentalism of varying levels of difficulty. It was all impressive and often flashy but doable, turns out he has a wealth of material and only showed the tip of the iceberg, I think he barely covered half of what was in the lecture notes.

Cards wise there was a nice variety of effects some of which needed set up but no funny decks or owt like that. On several occasions magicians around the room swore out loud upon climaxes (!) so it does hit home hard, the teaching was absolutely top notch with no stone left unturned. One little bonus was the way he'd explain how he did a sleight then show a way for those less gifted to do the same thing. His false riffle shuffle being a case in point, even I'll be able to do it after about 30 minutes practice and it looks so convincing.

For mentalists there were some really powerful effects including a very clever pk touches handling and a cool Anneman spin off where a piece of paper is folded then cut to reveal a kind of silouhette image of a famous person that has previously been selected by a spec at randomn. There was also a prediction trick where the name of a thought of person is found on a business card inside a wallet that has been held by another spectator throughout the routine and some nice applications of his favourite prop, the super sharpie.

Overall it was well worth the tenner cost, not least because afterwards we got chatting and a couple of us ended up going out for a kebab (apparently they’re a delicacy if you’re American, work that one out) and then to Tesco where we stocked up with a few beers as no pubs were open at 11.30 in the depths of the provinces. Then it was onwards to Oz’s Travelodge room where we sat and chatted about magic and what not for a good couple of hours. What a nice chap!

Now that's what I call a lecture!

And that's what I call a swift reply! Yeah twas pretty cool to end up talking about the time Daniel Garcia American Football tackled a tramp wearing a helmet for $100, and also to hear a professional's views on all the stuff that gets bandied about these forums. He broke out some really awesome stuff that wasn't his own material (so no methods) but that we'd also never seen and completely floored us. Unfortunately my brain has let me down over who's stuff it was, never mind.

The best trick of the night though in my opinion was the Leave Your Car On Double Yellows For 4 Hours And Not Get A Ticket, which wasn't in the notes dagnammit. I think the secret is to be blissfully unaware of UK parking restrictions combined with a healthy dose of every magician's best friend, lady luck.

Man are you ever luckey! I can think of no one who would be better to see for a lecture than Oz Pearlman. And getting to talk magic with him face to face after! Sounds like you had a pretty good day.

Hehe, sounds like had fun bronz. :D

The lecture he did at the convention in Ipswich was a bit shorter I think, but was brilliant to go and have a chat with him afterwards. :)

He is a nice guy, he really liked the flourishes that me and Stevebo showed him, but for you to spend the evening with him. Well thats brilliant must have had fun.

I would love to come across Oz again, he was brilliant and such a great guy to talk to.

I remember just after he showed "Perfection", he said "Who was fooled by that trick?". *Whole crowd raises their hands*. :)

Yea I'm surprised he went through the false shuffles, I wouldn't of thought that he would show us the false riffle shuffle as it is by Eric Anderson, and has been adapted by Guy Hollingworth. Nice of him to show it, and with his tips I managed to actually do it, rather than fial like all my pre lecture attempts.

Wow. That was great story.

I went to his lecture at the Zodiac Magical Society in West London. I was really surprised to see him because I was told last that he had trouble getting into the country. It was an emotional rollercoster because I really wanted to see him but I was dissapointed with the news. I didn't realize that he was actually in the country until I attended the meeting that night. I looked across the room and saw Oz! I couldnt' believe it.

He is a really nice guy. I was unprepared for his lecture and I didn't bring any money so I tried to make arragements to pick up the lecture notes later in the week. I asked for his card and he gave out his email. Then his words were 'I'm on MSN messenger. Do you have that? You can put me on your list." I was shocked. He had such a big influence on my magic. A couple of days later, I met him at Davenports and he called out to me by my first name. I appologized that I couldn't stay for his lecture that time and I left before his lecture started after getting the lecture notes that I wanted.

A week later I was chatting with him on MSN messenger about his first UK tour. I thought that was really cool.

I wonder when Jay Sankey will be touring the UK.

Visit http://www.blackpoolmagic.com/ for the Convention details showing a rather impressive line-up already although there are usually more names added (plus one or two removed) as we get closer to February.

Can you help me out, I saw Oz lecture in London. I have just been re-reading his lecture notes. I cannot find any reference to Super Sharpie, but I know he used it several times.
Can anyone refresh my memory as to what effects he used it for. I felt sure they were detailed in his notes, but I cannot find reference to it anywhere.
