Does anyone know of any good cheap parlor/stage tricks? Preferably able to be made at home. Anything except rope. Anyone got of any suggestions or ideas?

That's quite a broad question there, but the Discoman is right Mark Wilson is a great place to start.

Hmm thanks forgot that he has a whole chapter dedicated to that.

Let me try to narrow it down to the kind of tricks I am looking for- *Anything invovling canes or candles, tricks that DONT invlolve practice with an assistant (you can use a spectator as an assistant), *comedy, *tricks for kids through teens, and tricks with a lot of audience participation. Still kind of broad but I think I narrowed it down a bit.

*-Doesn't have to be but preferred.

I know this is not going to be of any help based on your first comment. But what you describe screams rope effect.

Not expensive
Do not need to use an assistant (can use audience member)
Great for comedy or serious
Excellent for children, teens and adults
loads of audience participation potential
Good for stage or Close up and everything in between.
Packs small, plays big.

Biggest draw back is when you have 5 cats ropes can be challenging to practice in the living room.

Canes and Candles, if you are talking fantasio type can get to be expensive and are not really comedy and doesn't really play to a young audience to me anyway canes and candles are a little more sophisticated. And really not geared toward audience participation, although I haven't really thought about it that way. But it is not me we are talking about.

I'm not a huge fan of rope magic but cut and restored, professors nightmare and bachelors needle have never let me down.

As for the canes and candles it doesn't have to be fantasio.

Rope is good however I already have a rope routine that I'm planning on using.

'The Cords of Shashtri' from the book 'Secrets of Alakazar' is a great routine. Easy peasy and lots of scope for presentation or just plain hamming it up with a couple of specs.
