Gothic Tarot Deck by Joseph Vargo

Postby Replicant » Jun 27th, '08, 10:15

I know this is not magic, strictly speaking, but I was wondering if any TM Tarot readers/collectors have purchased this deck. This is not really a review request, as such, but more of a heads up. (There's a review and plenty of info on this over at the Aeclectic forum).

Not to everyone's taste, to be sure, but I love the look of this deck; Vargo's artwork is beautiful. "Beautiful" is perhaps the wrong word but the artwork is stunning and I find the cards to be deeply inspiring. Black Hart are the only UK stockists as far as I can tell. Here's a couple of cards from the deck...

Personally I love this tarot and have used it myself. I bought my deck from ebay but I have seen it in a lot of new age shops.

They're very nice, but the trouble is if you want to use them for doing readings they would scare the hell out of the poor punter. Fair enough if you want them for your own personal collection or if you're going to use them as part of a bizarre-esque routine. If you want a pack for doing readings though you're far far better off with something like...oh I don't know...the Rider Waite.

If you want something a bit different but still "punter friendly" I would recommend the Medieval Tarot from cardshark. Available from cards4magic. They're beautiful plus they're marked. Now, true psychics like me and you will have no use for a marked deck, but one can see how lesser psychics might use such a ploy to heighten their status amongst the uninitiated. If you know what I mean. Make sure you get the right deck though - there's another (also nice) Medieval deck available. Make sure you get the cardshark deck.

I'm quoting myself here as I can't believe I said that. How could they possibly be the only UK stockist for this deck? I don't know what I was thinking.

Seeing as I'm just a Tarot beginner right now, I have no intention of scaring the cr*p out of people by producing this deck for a reading! For readings, I've ordered the Universal Waite deck; it seems nice enough, for starters at least.
