ACR -Help!!!!

Postby dgmagic » Jul 4th, '08, 18:36

Hi Guys (and Ladies)!

Saw this routine being perfomed recently and I so want to include it in my (currently limited) portfolio of card routines!

Where can I get the best resources (DVDs or books) for learning this routine?

Thanks,

TomDom

There's so much choice when it comes to a ambitious card routines and on this rare occasions I would actually recommend an Ellusionist DVD called Ambixtious Card as being worthy of you taking a look at.

Best thing to do is get a good basic card book, and learn a load of sleights.

That way, you can basically use a myriad of moves to create an ACR. Most of what makes a good ACR routine is just basic card handling skills.

Of course, there are also a load of ways you can add a kicker ending to it using gaffs and gimmicks, but on the whole, if you learn a load of basic sleights you'll find you can almost ad-lib when it comes to an ACR... after all, the whole routine for an ACR is based on the premise of a selection rising to the top over and over again.

Can I also mention that I recently performed an ACR using a Svengali deck... showing all cards different at the start (obviously). It was an absolutely simple routine, which I finished by saying 'and of course, the card wasn't really rising to the top, no need when I used a deck containing all the same card' and then showed all faces to be alike.
Bear in mind that you need to CONVINCE the audience the cards are all different at the start, and you're set to go.

Sorry to go off topic, but that reminds me of a quote by Robert houdin:

"Before you change an apple into an orange, you must make sure they believe it's an apple".

Obvious I know, but Strong magic (Darwin Ortiz) conatins a whole section on "conincers" that help achieve this.

Sorry to have rambled on... I'll stop now

Anyway, as for an ACR, I have to agree with Seige. Why shell out on a DVD when you can pick up royal road or something similar that will teach you all the sleights you need to design your own ACR? Much better than you mimicking Brad Christian whilst performing his.

Incidentally, There is a basic ACR included in royal road.....

Hi,

Daryl does a really nice DVD on this. Lots of different options within it + a special ending of his own.

Would that be the 'special ending' which someone's now borrowed and manufactured as a gimmick?

As Seige said, if you're juist starting out then Roatl Road is a great place to start and does contain quite a nice ACR to getr you going. Although for a good DVD I'd have to suggest World Greatest Magic's ACR DVD, a very good DVD with some brilliant ACR routines on it.

You Guys (and Girls!) are Awesome!

Studying the RRTCM - what a book!

Will look into the Ellusionist DVD even though I've seen some of their stuff before and was a litle disappointed (a lot of hype and good marketing!) - great resource for cards though!

Any suggestions for the best (in terms of delivery times and cost) sources for the Daryl DVD and World's Greatest ACR DVD?

Thanks,

Tom (to My Friends!) Dom x
PS: the 'x' is for 'The Lady of Mystery'!

I'll also vouch for Daryl's DVD. It's very much a 'teach a man to fish' kind of project. :)

Expert card Technique (The usual follow on to RRTCM) has a whole chapter on the ACR.

Really nice stuff, and you can see how David blaine got his stuff.

I started with RRTCM. Decent routine.

For more variation I agree the Ellusionist DVD is actually pretty good in this case though Brad Christian can go on a bit!

Jay Sankey has recently brought out a DVD packed with ideas perfect for ACR. 'Extremely Ambitious'. It covers the basics and includes some more of the wall and even gaffed phases to play with. Something to fit everyone's styles.

You got to love ACR. Once you have learnt a selection of phases you can just riff it depending on how you are feeling. Great effect.

Isn't there a rule against that sort of thing being sold?
