new trick

Postby MagicMatt777 » Jul 6th, '08, 03:24

I recently thought of a new trick and I was wondering what you guys would think of it....well heres a basic idea. I would call it life-line. Basically they freely choose a card and sign it (optional) you then take the cards opposite out of the deck and give some patter about them being connected. you then put there card back in the deck and take the opposite card and stab it twice making an X. they look through the deck and find there signed card with an X stab. Its fairly easy to perform but I think its original..Well what do you guys think?

Sounds like a variation on all the tricks out there, but cool enough. Although I don't see why you're going about naming your effects... If I make something up I just call it "The one where the aces all travel up my nose" or something like that. (Of course, I have no effect where aces travel up my nose, but you get the idea.)

So long as you don't actually go out and name your effects to your audience, then I don't see a problem with naming effects so you know what is what in your repertoire. However, If you start saying things like "OK, ladies and Gents, I'm now going to perform lifeline", A. They won't have a clue what you're talking about, and B. I just think it sounds a bit tacky (personal opinion).

Anyway, as for the effect, itself, I'm unsure as to what you mean by "you take the card opposite out of the deck"?

The mate or sister card is usually regarded as the other suit of the same colour. The mate of the Jack of Spades is the Jack of Clubs.

You're thinking of the ID, aren't you?

I like the sound of the effect you've come up with. It could be adapted for a spooky story, perhaps something about sympathetic magic and voodoo.

Sounds like a variation of an effect by Guy Hollingworth (Voodoo Card)...which is in his book Drawing Room Deceptions. If you own Guy's book, perhaps you can check out his method and compare it to yours.
