Introducing...

Postby frodolives » Jul 10th, '08, 15:28

Hello everyone,

I have been studying magic & mentalism for a few months now and have only performed for friends & family, and occasionally work colleagues so I have no professional experience whatsoever. I am pondering this though and have started writing bits of patter/script etc and have experimented with some ideas - some bad, some downright awful!

To give you an idea of who and what has inspired me I hereby present my study list if you will:

Read & Reading:
Derren Brown - Pure Effect/Tricks of the Mind
Jean Hugard - The Royal Road to Card Magic
Jean Hugard & J.J. Crimmins - Encyclopedia of Card Tricks
Jim Steinmeyer - Hiding the Elephant: How Magicians Invented the Impossible

Watched & Watching:
Andy Nyman - Get Nyman
Derren Brown - Mind Control/Something Wicked This Way Comes/An Evening of Wonders (live in Torquay)/Trick or Treat/Trick of the Mind
R. Paul Wilson - The Royal Road to Card Magic
Richard Osterlind - Mind Mysteries
Banachek - PSI

There are more but I'm actually boring myself now so God only knows how you're feeling.

Anyway, hopefully that introduces me a bit, but more importantly I look forward to possibly making some friends and chatting about magic.

Thanks for reading,
Andrew x

What a lovely introduction!
Sounds like you have a really good selection of material to read/watch and learn from, which is by far the best way to go about it!

Welcome to TalkMagic and I hope you enjoy it here!

Welcome to TM and a nice intro.

If I may, I will add to your list by recommending a book called 'scripting magic' by Pete McCabe.

This book may help you a lot with your writing of scripts as this is the topic that the book specifically deals with.

I guess that you could have picked that up from the title though

It's not really an optical illusion - it just looks like one!
