My introduction...

Postby smoked salmon » Jul 10th, '08, 15:03

Hello there!

I'm definately a beginner. No doubt about that.

My main interest is, I guess, what is best described as mentalism. I'm fascinated by how our minds work, suggestion, cognitive illusions etc. I've studied film and psychology at university - two subjects that both deal with "tricks of the mind" (and yes, I'm a Derren Brown fan...).

I also have a soft spot for card tricks, and know a few easy ones, but I still haven't decided if I want to learn too much about it - as it takes the mystery out of it - but at the same time, my admiration for good magicians just gets greater when I know how much practice and skill (timing for example) is needed.

At this point I'm reading a lot of books on my subjects of interest, and I'd love some recommendations into books that I might enjoy!

Well, if and when you decide that you would like to pursue card magic, there are two books/series of books I can really advise.

Firstly, The Royal Road To Card Magic. Available in it's original book form for probably not more than a tenner, or £55 approx. for the FIVE disc DVD set which is all filmed and explained by R.P.Wilson. It will teach you tonnes of tricks and sleights and really get you started with cards.

Secondly, is the series called Card College. There are quite a few volumes now (7 maybe?) and each one is certainly more expensive than The Royal Road. However, whilst the first few volumes will cover a lot of similar moves as RRTCM, they are depicted better and explained a lot clearer!

"I want to do magic...but I don't want to be referred to as a magician." - A layman chatting to me about magic.

Welcome Mr Salmon and you're in the right place for some mentalism advice. Unfortunately I'm not one of those qualified to give it on this subject

What I can offer is the advice to read some of the 'stickies' as I'm sure that there's one on starting out in mentalism.

Enjoy your time here

It's not really an optical illusion - it just looks like one!
