Buy books and dvds. not tricks.

You get more mystery per pound.

If you're looking for a good book to get you started, you can't really go too far wrong with Mark Wilson's Complete Course in Magic. It'll give you a brilliant basis in a very wide range of magic.

And of course there's the book Royal Road to Card Magic (also the DVD) if you're into cards. The book Modern Coin Magic by bobo if it's coins. As Lady of Mystery says Mark Wilson's book which covers lots of different things.

Oh, and welcome. Why not introduce yourself in the Intro section? :)

Take a look in the reviews section to help you decide. It will then save you needing to ask about each recommendation

You will have a much better idea of what you are buying as well so are less likely to waste your money.

Hi and welcome to TM. You haven't said what your skills are so to recommend something that you would be able to learn and perform with ease is problematic. If you are new, then the Mark Wilson Complete Course of Magic is a great place to start. Learn the basic card slieghts from Royal Road to Card Magic, Expert at the Card Table and Counts, Cuts, Moves and Subtleties by Jerry Mentzer. Learn the basics of coin magic by Bobos Modern Coin Magic and Intoduction to Coin Magic by Shigeo Futagawa. As far as tricks go, are you interested in stage, parlor, closeup or mental magic? If you are more advanced then books or videos by Jay Sankey, Bannon, Swain, Joshua Jay, Card College set by Roberto Giobbi and Rice's Silk Manuals. Having said all that, NFW is a good trick but so is Double Back by Jon Allen, Capitulating Cards by James Swain, Twisting the Aces, Oil and Water, Hot Rod, Jumping Gems, Scotch and Soda, Hoping Half set and one can go on and on. The point is, once you learn a trick, then you learn how to entertain with it. Don't go overboard on tricks, but build a good library of books and videos and you will learn how to make tricks as well.
cheers

Al

Both of the effects you mentioned are great. However, like everyone has stated before me, get some books too.

Here's what I'd recommend:

Mark Wilson's Complete Course in Magic, a pack of cards, a piece of rope, and some coins. That'll keep you busy for a while. And after that consider getting the Tarbell Course in Magic. It is quite costly, but a great investment and perfect for every magician's library.

Good luck,
~David

Completely agree with the above posters.

If however, you decide to disregard the good advice above, and waste money on a single trick when for the same price you could have 100s from a book, for a beginner, Entourage is better than NFW. NFW is the better effect, because you can show the faces of the cards using a sleight, however, the sleight is quite difficult to get right, and definitely shouldn't be the place you start.

Also, Entourage is in theory repeatable, whereas you'd have to do a little fumbling behind your back or under the table to ready NFW for the next performance.

The particular sleight used in NFW, and in many simlar oil and water effects is taught in the Royal Road to Card Magic, and if it's card magic you're interested in, this would be the place to start, not wasting money on a packet trick, which once you have shown to all your friends (assuming you make it that far with NFW), you'll have to go and buy another one.

For a general overview of magic, Mark Wilson is your man.
