Wow!

That could be a huge medical breakthrough if they do start making prosthesis.

Thanks,

I think it's because I can't see the top of the monkeys head, but I've started to envisage all sorts of nastiness happening to the poor chappy to achieve this. Probably unfounded though.

I think that sort of behaviour's been banned. Nah, it'll be a the nice woolly hat from an EEG machine.

In a world where they grow ears on the backs of mice why would they?

I don't know about that...From the article:

"...A pair of macaque monkeys with electrodes implanted in their brains..."

Obviously, there's some sort of brain surgery going on.

Mike.

Ew, that's ugly! I must have missed it when I was being enthusiastic. In which case, this is Bad Technology. Eschew it.

Yes, there would have to have been surgery to implant the electrodes (under full clinical conditions, including pain relief afterwards). Electrode implantation is actually a fairly minor operation. The only pain would come from the incisions; the brain can't feel anything. Once the incisions heal, there's no discomfort or distress.

If you think it's a cruel experiment, just ask any paraplegic if he'd mind having the same surgery to get the a similar result.

The difference is that I doubt anyone asked the monkey for his permission and he was probably not a paraplegic...

Incidentally, if a 'paraplegic' wouldn't mind why is the experiment not being carried out on one?

Just a thought...
