Magician

Postby goodismyname » Jul 18th, '08, 01:53

Hey everyone! When I turn 18 I want my profession to be a magician. In other words when I grow up I want to become a magician. Does anyone have any advice to prepare myself for becoming a magician? Examples: Keep a journal of all your magic. Script your routines. Do as many shows as you can.

from what i understand

I am not a magcian for a living, nor have i had a full time job yet. All i know is from what i jhave heard, It is not necessarily a reliable source of income. If you plan on being a magician for a living, you have to be pretty good. That's just what i've heard. I'm very interested in what professional magicians (meaning ones that do it as their job) have to say on the matter.

one thing i think is figure out what makes you different than everyones else and sell it. Magic is a business you are going to have to hustle to get work. Forget about what you don't have and just leave between your means. When you are ready Buy Hustle Hustle book on magic and the dvd and prepare for the hardest 3 years of fun and hard working. It's alot of blood sweat and tears. If you are up for it it could be yours by the way. Well welcome to talk magic nice to to see you around. Lastly stay away from shops like penguin magic and ellusionist which also mean theory 11. if you need to shop there do it but it is over hyped stuff nothing really new just junk in my view learn from the basics like mark wilson book on magic and tarbell that should keep you going but for now I would just start with mark wilsons books.

I know penguin magic has some new over hyped products but they have reasonable prices and a lot of the same material as other shops. I personally like penguin magic, I mainly stuck because of their customer service. When I was first beginning their staff helped me find specific items. I just wanted to point out penguin magic isn't all hyped up tricks.

Barton: Have you read the Bible, Pete?
Pete: Holy Bible?
Barton: Yeah.
Pete: Yeah, I think so. Anyway, I've heard about it.

Learn how to make people like you. If they like you, they'll like your magic. If they love you, they'll love your magic.

Grow old. Live your life. Fall in love, get drunk, chase girls (and catch a few), get arrested, read loads of books, write poetry. Then, when you've got all of that out of your sytem, think about turning pro. And don't let anyone talk you out of it. If it's in your blood, it's in your blood.

It's late. I'm not sure that any of that made sense.

You know, I told my mother the exact same thing when I was young. She looked at me and said, "But, Michael, you can't do both."

Mike.

Then you're only living it half-way.

That is true like the wallets they sell and the dvd's but however, if you learn from like from the basics you can figure out how the effect is pulled off just by watching there demo's. They have some good stuff. On the other hand I remember a couple magicians won't let them sale their products from that company. That says something they are not reputable dealer. Like mjm magic or even stevens magic would be a better shop to go to because they are reputable. Thats just why I won't even shop there. But I do know everyone has an opinion. Hope that helps me explain my self.

But recently they haven't had any of the books that I wanted so I'm stiching to hank lee's I think, unless there's a better one in the states that anyone recommends.

I've had some ok experiences with penguin in the last few months, as well as hocus-pocus.com.

For whatever that's worth to the rest of you.

That's a hard request here...
First of all you don't need to wait until you're 18 to do professional shows.
Second of all I think the best way to go about it is to do some free shows now and see people's reactions and what they like/don't like.
That should prepare you for hecklers too.
