Just out of interest how old are you and how long have you been actively studying magic?

It's far too early in the day for me to start insulting people - I usually wait 'til late evening for that - but your writing style and attitude is very reminiscent of the type of want-it-all-now people who post on the dreaded E forum. I know you don't post there but, boy, you'd fit in.

You should acknowledge Michael Jay's great advice. You really couldn't have asked for a more comprehensive answer from someone who's a working pro, knows what they're talking about and has given up some of their time to write it all down for you.

Any chance of a book, 'The Wit and Wisdom of Michael Jay'? :)

I lost count of the number of detailed, and extremely helpful posts Mike has made a long time ago. Seriously, if you're fairly new to magic (and also if you are not), read Mike's initial advice on this thread. It's golddust.

Thank you. Ihave found enough helpful tips now. I probably won't check back on this post again, so otherwise private message me. Thank you for the advice mike. That is all. If you would like to talk more about who I sound like, and the dreaded path of e forums and youtube
performers, i would suggest you start a new post. There I would be glad to discuss them.

Thank you,

It's not always about figuring out a trick; that's the easy part. It's learning skills. And sometimes the trick if it involves something you just can't guess. It's hard to find a good magician expect for online. Do they even expose anything in that Rericted section? Just looking for advice.

I'm sorry, but I'm confused, so maybe you could help?

Firstly, what Magic society charges $100 a month? I know you usually have to pay a joining fee and maybe a fee for attending meets, but not sure which one costs a total of $2700 including a convention.

Secondly, would you expect a mechanic or magician to spend their spare time teaching you for free or next to nothing? They have spent years learning their skills, maybe having to spend money on University, books, tools etc. Why do you feel you should be taught magic by somebody for peanuts? It is obvious that you don't appreciate the time, money and effort they have put in to get where they are. Why should somebody GIVE their free time to you?

You are still asking for places to get free or low cost magic, even though you have been given enough information in this thread.
If you want to learn more about performance, presentation and the like, forget all of those things you have watched on Youtube. I know you say you only watched to see if you wanted to buy, but watching performances can tend to lead you to copy that style. This is one of the main reasons that people suggest books. I have DVD's as well as books, but I get most use from books.

Mike has given you lots of good advice. You are lucky, as he gives good advice for free.
There is one place he didn't mention, which I am reluctant to give you the full details to, so I will just tell you it is a project with "pig" in the title and is three words long.

It could be useful to you, but I would rather know that you have spent time and effort finding out the rest of the title yourself. You seem to have ignored the fact that people have given you information. I would tell you the whole title, but I can only answer to the way I have seen you post. I cannot convince myself that our levels of ethics and commitment match.

Instead of acknowledging or thanking them, you have just asked for more information. Make some effort and start looking at the advice, which YOU asked for and was given FOR FREE.

EDIT

Writing at time of previous post.

I have to agree with you, Kate - I think that your observation is 100% correct.

No matter what, if some of the folks hereabouts got worthwhile information from my post, then it was time well spent. And thank you all for the kind comments.

Thank you for the advice mike. That is all.

You're welcome. That is all.

It's due for release in 2020 - watch for it.

My pleasure. I've pulled a great deal of wisdom out of Fitzkee writings. He was considered required reading back in the day (and still is by the more hard core theorists today). It's not easy reading, but it is rewarding reading. I'm pleased that I was of some help to you, sir. :P

Before I forget, just one last thing here...

Ben - there is a world of difference between a conversation and a performance. Conversations are not supposed to be scripted (and by their very essence, they cannot be scripted), but a performance should be scripted. If you can't see the very basic difference between a conversation and a performance, then I'm fairly sure that you can't see the more subtle difference between a trick and magic.

Mike.

I am very sorry

I apologize for my extremley rude comments and attitude.
You were trying to help me, and give me advice, and I shouldn't of rebeled against you in my selfish conciet. Instead of thanking you for your advice, I thought only of how other people were viewing me.
Once I actually took the time to read all of your comments, I found them to be indeed truley kind and helpful. I hope you will forgive me for my ridiculous behavior. I do not blame you if you don't. But I hope we can still get along.
Again, I can not thank you enough for the time and effort you put into giving me your free and helpful advice. It is certainly much more than I have ever given any of you, and more than I deserved. Thank you.

It takes a big man to give such an unconditional apology, Ben.

You also have my apology for being so reactionary - I honestly should be above such things at my age.

More than happy to put it all in the past, myself. :P

Good deal.

Mike.
