The Insidious Dr. Fu Lui Tu

Postby Lenoir » Jul 22nd, '08, 15:57

I'm sure many of you know this trick from the Royal Road, but if not, I'll give you a quick run through!

A pack of cards is bought out and in the usual manner, one selected. The performer loses the card in the deck via a cut and the proceeds to spread the cards. In the middle he finds an upturned joker (or alternative) and comments on this being Dr Fu Lui Tu's card. He turns the card over and there is some sort of oriental writing on the back. It supposedly reads "You will pick the (spectators card).

The magician then asks if the audience knew how the dr. knew, and after a negative response, he spreads the cards to show the only card face up, is the spectators card.

Now anyway, to my main point. What are peoples thoughts on this? I have quite a good patter line, but am quite unsure of the actual strength of the trick. It's pretty simple and I personally like it, but isit to see through?

Your opinions, and any improvements on the original would be greatly appreciated!

I think it could work with a different angle. It strikes me of the sort of trick that was dreamed up in a very old fashioned way with the Oriental name pun. That's the first thing I'd lose. Or if I was going to do it, I'd make sure I got a Chinese speaking friend to accurately write the symbols for me so it was a bit more respectful. I mean, you wouldn't do a trick and talk about Dr Bud-bud and have ther card identified by being the only one with a red dot on it, would you?

Made me chuckle Kate!

However, it isn't a force, although that is something to think about!

I tell a story about being in China a few years back (true), meeting a magician(true) who could locate any card without being anywhere near the deck (not true!) and this is my tribute to him and the card with the writing on the back is like modified by him etc etc. It works with Tally Ho jokers well because of the wee dancing man!

I quite like this effect and have used it a couple of times in an oriential themed routine with chinese coins and an effect with fans. It always seems to go down really well, it does seem silly at first glance but it's fun and specs always enjoy a good, fun trick.

I once saw a routine with the chinese sticks. Probably is not politicaly correct anymore but the patter went along the lines of the ancient Chinese magician. I foo Yoo and his twin brother, I Foo Yoo Too.

Explaining a joke always ruins it. Of course it is!

Haha! I think most people don't actually say it out loud! I have changed the name and just talk about a Chinese Magician I met whilst over there!
