Merlin on BBC1 this September

Postby kolm » Jul 23rd, '08, 11:55

"Merlin is a thrilling fantasy drama set to enchant family audiences in a brand new 13-part series on BBC One this September.

Every Saturday night audiences are destined to experience a series of magical adventures, as they follow the unlikely friendship of a would-be wizard (Merlin) and the future King (Prince Arthur)."

Smashing stuff. The BBC are really shaping up to have a good Autumn line up this year.

I'm expecting something pretty awful along the lines of Robin Hood. The young wizard plot is never going to be great. I enjoyed the Sam Neil Merlin they did a few years back, but then they spoiled it with a sequel.

It can't be as bad as bonekickers. Can it? Holby city meets indiana jones.

Certainly won't hold a torch to their flag-ship show, Doctor Who!

the cast sounds good. Though Merlin is being played by a 22 year old unknown.

as well as John Hurt,as the voice of Merlins dragon mentor, A number of other stars have joined the cast, including former Eastenders star and Bionic Woman Michelle Ryan who play evil sorceress Nimueh.

Santiago Cabrera, who played painter Isaac Mendez in Heroes, will play Lancelot, while Richard Wilson and Anthony Head take on the roles of Gaius and King Uther Pendragon respectively.

It does kind of smack of jobs for the boys, since Julie Gardener has cast several of her favorites from doctor who.

Im counting the days till we see John Barowman as "Sir Campalot, the pink night"..

"Fancy a night in boys?"

Sounds like another Robin Hood job to me (i.e. a watered-down version of a classic set of stories). Merlin was a lot older than Arthur.

But hell, the stories have only been around for a thousand years or so, screw that old school stuff. Let's have talking dragons and barely-pubescent wizards. How about a CGI goblin, and maybe the Henson workshop can supply a cute comedy muppet sidekick. It'll be great - like Harry Potter crossed with 'Labyrinth'.

I have to say that the second episode of 'Bonekickers' was a great improvement on the first (which was ridiculous, especially the ending), but I've not yet seen this week's show.

It was a cross between Time Team and Carry On Indiana Jones....

Still on about Bonekickers, did anybody actually enjoy last night's episode? I don't mean the general ancient Babylon vs Iraq plot but all that faffing about and jerky editing - one second hailing a cab and the next second being in it, the young girl's genius at chess and chortling about being good at puzzles, the animation of the symbols on the jar/brick - all very confusing!
