yumi. fism 2003... flowers

Postby daleshrimpton » Jul 25th, '08, 14:30

Ive just come across this clip of Japanese lady magician, Yumi. and what a great act it is.

note the colours of the playing cards, that match the petals of the flowers, and the lovely silk fountain, that turns into a rose.

breathtaking stuff!

and all done so slow....

Those were some of the best one handed fans I've seen in a while.

Now that is what I call a performance!

I actually found that quite a mechanical performance. I prefer magic that does something. Sure, it's an incredible skill to do all those empty-hand productions and fans, but after a while... meh.

Give me Angela Funovits any day - she's a lot tighter in my opinion. Also she injects some pizzaz into this kind of thing.

I have to agree with Dale. In that particular video, Angela is far more mechanical in many areas. She also telegraphs quite a few sections (in my opinion).

Beyond execution - there is also the matter of the performer's perceived attitude. Yumi looked like she was enjoying what she was doing - and even made it seem as if the "magic" was as shocking to her as to the audience.

Angela looks like she's just enjoying Angela. I find her to be an incredibly stiff performer, and to me, she comes off as just a teeny bit full of herself.

If you like or dislike Funovits, you have to admit she has some nice tenkai.

Yeah, I mean that. And everything else.

At least she didn't just do the same thing like ten times. The video of this Yumi was just the same thing over and over. Produce a card. Fan. Drop them. Misdirect. Suddenly another production. Fan. Drop. Fan. Drop. Yeah, we get it. We got it three minutes ago. Do something else.

At least Yumi is less effeminate than Jeff McBride. And that takes a lot more practice than a back palm.

Actually, watching that video, that's pretty much exactly what she did...

Some card throwing and a few other bits - but pretty much a standard manipulation routine.
