Article in Nature - Attention and awareness in stage magic

Postby Sica » Aug 6th, '08, 16:31

I noticed today a really interesting article in Nature, about neuroscience and magic and what one reveals about the other.

It's written by several magicians and some neurobiologists all working together to give insight into what magic can reveal about the human visual system and how we focus our attention.

It's called Attention and awareness in stage magic: turning tricks into research and you can read it here:
http://www.nature.com/nrn/journal/vaop/ncurrent/full/nrn2473.html

I actually attended a lecture about this a while ago in Edinburgh where we were shown the 'vanishing ball' trick and the video with the gorilla (I didn't spot the gorilla..)

This is an area I find facinating. I did a search but couldn't find anything about this article being posted elsewhere. My apologies if this is a repeat topic.

ETA: Fixed the link

Link is broken... but is the article you mention anything like the one mentioned in this thread?

Thanks for the heads up. I've fixed the link.

The article isn't the one mentioned in that thread (and I spotted that thread just after I'd posted this one), but they're clearly spawned by the same thing.

The Nature article I linked is the actual scientific paper, complete with full references. The other article is rewritten to be suitable for a newspaper. They're both worth reading.

Aha! Many thanks for the link. I'll add one to my post pointing here as well.

(Oh, and welcome to TalkMagic :))
