Restaurant work

Postby Findlay » Aug 25th, '04, 15:13

I have just been reading a thread in the Magic Café about what close up magicians should charge in a hotel or restaurant. All of the replies were from across the pond and nobody from Britain. One guy in Brazil thought that $23 for two hours work was great. Mind you, the minimum wage in Brazil is $84, so I suppose he would think that.
Anyway, some of these guys look at the prices on the menu and charge the equivalent of two meals as their hourly rate and perform for a minimum of two hours. Even considering they are being paid in dollars, $100 for two hours work seems to be the norm. What sort of rates do the magi in the UK charge and how are these rates arrived at?

As others will tell you, The question of fees and what you charge for jobs isnt one that is politly discussed.
All I will say is charge double what you think you are worth, that way you have room to negociate.
Also, fees differ greatly from area to Area.

the standard uk rate for a stolling magician is £50 for half an hour or part there of, which roughly equates to £50 to £100 per job for resturant work.
I don't get any complaints about this range of fee from most places but remember to pitch your offer considering your venue and amount of work involved.

my rates vary from £50 an hour to £100+ an hour depending on the clientel and venue.

It's been a long time since I table hopped so any fee that I charged before wouldn't be applicable for today. However, I charge between 120 and 150 euros for a 45 minute mind reading cabaret often doing 3 gigs a night!!

I am also interested in starting to do walk around magic but am finding it very hard to get any managers to even listen to what I have to offer I have even tried to offer doing it for free in order to advertise for my own business and suggestions would be greatly appreciated.
