That is complete stupidity.

These movies should not be haulted because there are protests from the Chruch or anyone! ...

...They should be haulted 'cause the first one was horrible and a complete chore to get though.

I loved the books and I'm not one of those snobs that think that things can't translate well to film - it's all about the approach and what you do with it. Things obviously need to be changed for the screen. So none of those things caused my dislike for the movie - I just found it so boring I wanted to scoop my eyeballs out with a spoon.

I have a sneaky feeling that the decision has very little to do with lobbying from Rome, more likely the low profit levels, internal politics at the studios and that kind of thing. The James Bond films have been heavily criticsed by the Vatican over the years but they kept on rolling as did the Carry On films despite criticisms so perhaps it's a just bit of spin, hype, useful conveniece of seeming to give in to pressure rather than addressing or being held to task over any faults in the first film. If there were enough real interest in doing a second film it would be done regardless.

My girlfriend's mother was told by the priest not to go and see 'The Golden Compass'. So of course she immediately wanted to know what she was missing out on, and went to watch it!

I think Mandrake's probably right and that it simply didn't do well enough at the box office. It's a shame to leave the trilogy unfinished.

Did a bit of poking around and found that Golden Compass grossed $190 million-ish, while films like Narnia and Order of the Phoenix (Harry Potter) grossed around $280 million. So Golden Compass was down a bit, but surely not enough to cancel the entire trilogy?

My gut feeling is that somewhere along the line certain influential people did not want a blockbuster mainstream movie in which we see god as an old frail leader being used by those around him for their own ends (sound familar?), and ultimately being deposed in a bloody civil war of man vs. heaven. Or something like that. Oh, and the priesthood being portrayed as villains.

Far better to have a nice cuddly lion beating up on witches.

I've lost count of the number of films which allude to a Vatican Mafia amongst the upper levels, I have no doubt there are dubious movers and shakers in there, it's an organisation like many others and a good conspiracy theory is always worth trying! Having worked a lot with them over many years, I have great respect for Parish Priests who take all the flak and do the graft but if one of them told me not to go see a film I'd be round the cinema with my bucket of popcorn in ten seconds flat :D !
