Teeny wooden box?

Postby queen of clubs » Aug 14th, '08, 12:55

Can anyone help me with my search? I'm looking for a little wooden box with a hinged lid, just about big enough to contain a card folded into quarters.

It doesn't necessarily have to be gimmicked (ie. made specifically for magic) but that would be great, too.

I'm aware of John Kennedy's 'Mystery Box' effect, but I don't like the look of that one. I very specifically want a hinged lid so it looks like a teeny treasure chest, and ideally it would have carved wooden feet and maybe some embedded metal scroll work. A lot to ask, I know!

Anyway, my search continues on trinket websites, etc. :D

Try a jewellers? Would a ring box be the right size? someone might be able to point you in the direction of a wooden one.

Try various on line craft shops, some of the bigger ones sell boxes like this for decorating. Also look for pyography tools and materials, people often burn designs into small boxes of this type.

If we can hit that bullseye then the rest of the dominoes will fall like a house of cards... Checkmate!

It sounds like a stash box to me. Dr Herman's Headshop in Manchester will have what you're looking for.

(do a search on the above site for "boxes" or "wood box" or just use the menu on the right side of the page and you will find LOADS more)

... took me 2 minutes to find... I like to use a computer and a thing called an "Intra-web", very helpful along with fingers!

not sure if it's exactly what you're after, but I've got a little box that I got in Tam Shepherd's in Glasgow about 15 years ago. It's a coin box, and the idea is is that you put square of perspex in the bottom of the box, a coin in the slit at the top, and the coin passes all the way from the slit at the top to the bottom.

While you wouldn't be using it as a coin box, it's a nice little box, and the gimmick is constructed in a way that you could use it to slide a folded card inside.

Magic Nevin have them for sale for £6.99:

Have a look and see what you think. It's a nice little box, made of wood, and a perfect size.

Thanks for your help, everyone. Some interesting sites there.

Yeah, yeah. Sarcy git ;) I can use the internet, too, but I was asking here on the off-chance someone might have some specific information, or recommendations, considering folded cards inside wooden boxes is nothing new in magic, and we are magicians.

Actually, I've been looking around and I've decided to get a quote on a handcrafted box made to my specifications. Hopefully it won't be too expensive...

Well there's this one:

http://www.magicbunny.co.uk/phpBB2/view ... lippincott

but you have to push the card in a little. I imagine you are looking for something a bit more treasury or chesty looking. Something with a curved lid. You could always pit a hinge on the lid of the Mystery Box.

Having one made up personally, could really sting you.

The problem is finding a box that is small enough. A lot of craft sites have got 'small' boxes, but they're still way too big (in my opinion). When you find tiny boxes, they are often not hinged.

It's a shame you want the card in quarters (Tommy Wonder preferred eighths, I think), or I'd suggest the Tibetan Wishing Box. Not quite what you described, and the method would have to be different.

So probably not much of a suggestion, really!

These might have been suitable: https://www.shopholistic.co.uk/viewprod_ANW826WB.php , but they are currently unavailable.

I share your pain QoS; I have been looking for a Wooden Okito Box, but no one seems to stock them in this country. Yes, I could order from the US, but it seems overkill.

Allen Zingg's Tibetan Wishing Box may be suitable:

It's covered on some of his DVDs, including Master Billet Course Vol.1

A *cough* friend of mine told me that you can find plenty of boxes the right size in 'alternative' shops (you know, the kind that sell rizla for those people that like to smoke foot long roll-ups). The only trouble then is finding one that doesn't have a cannabis leaf on the lid.

We have Micheals crafts here I know that doesn't help, but its one of these huge box chain stores. They have what you are looking for just right for a folded card. If you wanted feet on the box you would have to do that yourself. Not difficult because the same craft stores sells all kinds of accent pieces. The boxes are sold with the purpose of the box being a craft in itself and you decorate it as you wish. If you have something along those lines you may want to give them a try.

I remember Tommy Wonder used one but I think its just a ring box. Search around for ring boxes and you might find one that looks like a treasure chest. I do the same effect but I use a regular grey colored ring box. It fits a folded card very well and secure even with a paper clip attached.
