The ultimate treasure trove

Postby lindz » Aug 17th, '08, 19:00

As we all know Talkmagic is an absolute treasure trove but sometimes I find it difficult to find the treasure within the massess of other stuff on here, so I thought why not have all the treasure within one place, have our cake and eat it as such. Okay the stickys are easy to navigate so theres no need for them here but if someone find's a topic that has some valuble information in it that's lost in the masses just paste the link here so everyone can just click on the link and find all the valuble information right here instead of searching for endless hours.Right I'm off to find a link.

Here found one on page 94 of miscallaneous which probally most people do not look at. It is a topic about How Nick's first stage act went but there is a great lesson to be learned in here.

http://www.talkmagic.co.uk/ftopic627.php

Another of useful sites to magicians, again on page 93 this time

http://www.talkmagic.co.uk/ftopic71-0-asc-0.php

From supports and tips page 80 a few links on misdirection from a website although some links don't work because this is 5 years old there are still some worth checking out

http://www.leirpoll.com/default.asp

A brief but important message from Siege about repeating effects to the same audiance

This would need some serious organisation to make it work. For starters you'd need to put all the links in the first post so they can all be found. Second, they'd need to be indexed somehow so that anyone looking for anything in particular can find that particular link.
In essence, it's what the Search function is for.

I know what you're getting at though. You probably feel that many articles and posts almost go to waste as they sink under the sea of new topics. I suppose the only way would be to do for yourself and save them as bookmarks in your own browser so you know where to find them. I don't think its do-able to make it all easily and accessibly available to everyone. Although if you've bookmarked them, you could direct other members toward specific pieces when necessary. And if more members did this it might save all that useful and vital information.

I was thinking about this actually,
I know i for one am extreamly grateful for this forum, and wish there was something i could do to "give back".
The mods do a fantastic job on here and it would be nice to be able to help out more.

So an idea to toss around.

Maybe some members who want to could each have an area they are responsible for. In terms of collating that material.

For example one person could be for seance information, another predicitons or thumb writers, billets etc etc.

Then maybe have a sticky thread where only those involved post and have the links in their post, which can be updated as necessary.
Then anyone looking for quality informtion etc on a specific area can look at that post and have ten links or whatever to the most useful posts on TM.
Kind of like an index or would that be contents??

Anyways.............

Just a thought.

The idea is good but who's to say what is important/useful. No one individual knows everything and we all have our favourite ways of doing things.

The closest I've seen to this working is on a non magic site for trance music production, the thread that they use is here:

http://www.tranceaddict.com/forums/show ... 501b5c2ffe

The difference however is that with trance production most people don't mind sharing the secrets, with magic all you can really do is suggest such and such a book for coins, such and such for cards etc. We already have this for mentalism:

http://www.talkmagic.co.uk/ftopic11429.php

So maybe we could start one thread to incorporates each of the main elements in the same format as bananafish's post re: mentalism?

Ok this will take alot of organisation and time but wouldn't it be fantastic to have alot of useful link's that have effectively sunk to the bottom of the ocean and can't be found when needed, so I have decided I need a new project and I will take this on myself it may take 6 months or even a year to complete but if it benefits everyone then it's a good thing. I will continue to add link's for a few months until I have enough to index into different catorgories then I will also make a table of contents. I will personally look through every single topic on TM which will take a while but hey I did say I need a project and if in the meantime anyone finds any topic of interest send it to me and I will add it so like magicbell suggested it will all be in one post. Strep I don't mean this to be like which book, dvd or trick should I buy because like you said everyone has different opinions and theres loads of these it's more like peoples experiances when performing and general information that will appeal to the massess but like I said this is a project so if it pulls off fantastic but if it doesen't nobody has lost anything

I commend everyone for the efforts in this so please don't take this the wrong way, and it is possible I don't understand exactly what you are trying to do. But it sounds to me you are attempting to do what this forum already is. A collection of thoughts and ideas based around a specific topic. The only thing that I can see differently is if the board was structured differently. Broken down into Coins, cards, illusions, parlour etc, Problem is then it can be broken down even more. Gimmick cards, gimmicked coins...well you get the point. Perhaps if somebody wanted to create an 'index' as you are suggesting and then checking with a moderator if another heading could be added that would be a read only and one person would be in charge of adding to the index once a week to keep it organized. Even as I type I see the amount of work, the headaches and stresses that would be involved in such an endeavour.

And I'm not convinced that it would be a good thing.

Anyway I just thought I'd throw my pennies in there before the hard work begins and all for naught. The other side of this is even if nothing is gained for Talkmagic. The person who gathers and sorts the information is going to have a wealth of information at their fingertips. So more power to you.

When my wife and I decided to get a dog we thought long and hard as we wanted a big dog but we also both work. So we figured that we would get a large enclosure put a nice dog house in it and during the day the dog would have plenty of room and a place to go to get out of the elements. Dog houses were stupidly expensive. How difficult could it be to build one?A floor a roof a door and sides. Because it gets cold we would also need a wind break inside the dog house. No problem a few days and I would be done. It took at least a month, yes I went overboard, framed the house put in insulation, two rooms, Shuttered windows, a sun deck and ceder shingles. The dog spends perhaps 1% of the time in the dog house even when it snows and 99.9% in her lounge chair that is also in the enclosure which is actually in a picnic pavilion that has its own roof and is surrounded by woods on three sides. So she is well protected.

It is incredible to me how something that starts out quite simple can turn into a nightmare oh so quickly. The upside? I have a very spoiled Husky.

Ok I don't quite think I'm explaining myself properley. I'm not trying to get information across on cards, coins, rope, mentalism, gimmicks, books, dvds or any magic related props what I'm trying to get across is valuble advice on things like timing, mis-direction, patter, peformance, confidance, general advice and vital links on such things that have been lost. This is more for people who want to perform publicly or newcomers but don't have the confidance and the other aspects you can't learn practising in front of a mirror. Hope's this makes more sense.

Lindz, if this is a treasure trove of information, we need to cut all this talking! It will just make it a lot harder to find the relevant piece of info.

I suggest you do as replicant did/is doing and finding all the links you can and link them to a thread in your signature. Anyone who digs up anything particularly interesting can PM you!
