What magic set?

Postby taffy » Aug 18th, '08, 21:08

Hi guys,

After reading posts on another thread regarding magical influences, it made me think

I would love to ask all our non UK Talk Magic members what magic set you received as a child?

I ask this as the majority of all UK magicians (and non magicians) all received a Paul Daniels magic set as a child.

I was just wondering what non UK residents received?

A Paul Daniels Magic set? Never heard of them but I guess that as I was in my early twenties when he first hit the headlines, I would have been too old.

I don't remember what it was called....It was a little box that mainly came with gags and a few tricks. It had a coin, a double head coin, a double tails coin, a couple optical illusions, and i can only remember 1 trick. It was some lame trick where you predictied the color they picked.

I have never heard of a Paul Daniel's magic set.

my first magic set, was the Hanky panky magic set.
the magic contained in it, was pretty much the same as the early paul daniels sets. even down to the cards with the red and black draggon pattern on the back.
prior to getting a magic set, i was given a couple of books,( the ladybird book of magic being one ) and was taught a magic trick by a great uncle.

I had random odds and sods from the joke shop. One of those mini guillotines, coin penetration, egg cup, etc. Then my first full set was a Paul Daniels.

Blimey, those Paul Daniel effects are a blast from the past. I now remember my gran and aunt buying me similar about 20 (cough) something years ago. Amazing how that photo has just triggered loads of memories.

1980s + early 90s for me. First (still have it) was a Fiscer Price magic suitcase, all the tricks were contained within, it had a ball & vase (in the shape of a chicken sitting on an egg), some sponges, a changing colour hanky, and various leavers etc. inside the box that operated different tricks. It also had a brilliant magic wand that had a flower appearing at the top. I've still got it, I might post a picture of it some time if I get a chance.

After that, I took up magic seriously after getting a Paul Daniels set in 1989. After this, I got various Houdini branded magic sets in the early 90s, and learned through books out the library.
