hiiiiiii there people. my name is paul and im 25 male uk from england. "probably in the rain by now lol) grreat forum :)
this year my interest in magic has started to grow again. I used to love performing when i was younger -self working, set up deck. and ive felt inspired to take it up again (by my little cousin getting interested in it of all things lol) Ive become determined to learn some sleight of hand/movies with cards. something that always before would make me want to run and cower. Ive found visual tuition such a great thing and have startled myself by finally picking up a few things. by learning movies that books would. completely bamboozle me with - i dont learn well from books, its just me -(hold fingers perpindicular and at right angles from deck etc lol) i got card control when i was younger. and it was too advanced, almost scarred me for life lol. i considering investing in a dvd. to bridge the gap. and teach me basic card control. i know ellusionist hasnt proved too popular on here. so i was thinking kaufman;s basic basic card control. altho it seems to have no tricks. its not as expensive and covers many sleights. as great reference guide. any commeents and reccomendations please?? :)
hope to hear from u foljs soon, all the best. your "hope to be " friend. keep the great work up
Paul

Kaufman is good but uses quirky camera angels during each introduction which is a bit annoying. The moves are shown well and it certainly helped me undstand a lot of them. Also think about Techno Card Magic - a slim book but the explanations are very simple and straightforward - most onlines places can supply it.

cheers mandrake;). and thanks again peeps im getting lots of help. hehe u know i had the strangest mental image when u mentioned. crazy camera angles, and it was of these strange off the wall psychadellic angles. ; up the nose shots, on top of the head. near the ankles. and all these dazzling assistants writheing about with a huge frozen grin on their faces. hehe. so what style of magic do u magicians perform, and who are your favourite magicians :) i dont know. too much about the lore, but my favourites. at present include penn and teller and tommy cooper. i read the saddest story about him performing when he was like 12 i think at school and it all went wrong. and people laffed and he ran off crying. real upset. but then that made him great. he revolved his style around mistakes and lots of humour. and he could do some cool magic too. maybe laughter is 1 of the best forms of misdirection too. i would love to see some of houdinis close up. if theys any video footage on him.
thanks alot for the replies and hope to hear from u real soon

Reading it again, what I actually wrote (in error) was:
but uses quirky camera angels
which is even more worrying!

The intro to each routine is the strange bit, closeups of only part of his face, the picture at 45 degrees etc which I found irritating as it detracted from what he was saying. It's still a worthwhile teaching vid though!
