Postby Figo » Aug 22nd, '08, 13:30

hey everyone it's been a while, i've taken a long time out as i felt really jaded and fed up with the way my magic has been going, so i concentrated on my comedy show and building up my personality to the point where i am really happy with how i present my stuff, i am now looking to specilise in specific form of magic, now what do i focus on? cards? every granny and their dog is doing cards at the moment, mentalism ....ditto, so i've decided to specilise in macabre magic going really dark and really getting inside peoples heads and messing with them, i got garden of the strange by Calab strange which is along the lines of where i wanna go just wondering of anyone could point me in the dirrection of some good macabre magic books , also quick question is this the same as burlesque magic ?

Do the same as most magicians spose, only like to think I do it different to most as well....Cards are cliched, I take them to gigs for pure filler, or if I cant be bothered to actually do any work, theyre my security blanket incase the crowd are very card trick based and want to see some generic tricks...no flourishes here thanks...

Im particualry fond of odd things that happen in specs hands, like things to be clean and examinable....lots of the metal bending...like the muscle reading alot....that could be used very nicely for something macabre and dark. So you looking to scare people here or just mame them lol ? Stigmastism is a digital download on Magicshop, has some lovely techniques using ur own blood (how cheery this post is lol)

I feel your pain, honestly I do, but here is the problem, only magicians are tired of card effects. Every now and again I run into a spectator who really doesn't want to see one, but then it is usually because good old Uncle bob twice removed used to show them the same effect where they deal 15 rows of cards 62.5 times. Once I'm passed my first effect they want more. Same is true for coin tricks, less so but you still run into the people who's same uncle bob would make coins appear behind their ears. Or in the case of my Uncle would make the queen cry real tears.

As far as the deep dark world of Bizarre magic. I have a host of refrences that I turn too but I ran into a recurring problem. Nobody that I could find was really doing the deep dark create your own religion kind of stuff. Andruzzi came close on a few effects, making demons appear from a tray of sand, (it never really worked for him). TA waters seemed to want to head in that direction but falls a little flat although he has some good ideas. Sheils is my largest inspiration although he is more of a mountback (not sure of the spelling) but I enjoy his thoughts. Docc Hillford is another one. Again he has the look for it but again for me he falls flat. I want to raise the dead (no not a sceance that raises the spirit, I want the dead  ). All the above are really great at what they do, but its not what I wanted in the realm of bizarre magic.

Then I found the Wiccan's and Haida culture while out west. Made friends with a few went to some meetings. I read and learned and ended up taking some of the legends from both groups and moved them from the mental/spritual to the physical. Then I started making up my own legends and rituals based on theirs (to make it easier on me).

An example: Before a ritual is started a small vase like item is passed around and you channel all your negative energy into the vase and bury the vase.

I've taken this one step further the vase is passed around and then corked but not buried. Then it is placed on the palm of a spectator who is not to move. The vase begins to shake, the negative energy inside is getting restless. An ornate wooden box is quickly opened it is full of sand. The vase is buried in the box but that doesn't stop our negative energy oh no, not by a long shot as long black snakelike demons flow from the box. (yes I can get the Adruzzi thing to work...most of the time)

of course finding a venue is difficult in my corner of the world.

If you've been working on comedy then why not do sponges, it seems like quite a jump to go from comic to macabre.
Also sponges are novel, talk to Lady of Mystery if your interested, shes the in house Expert!

Comedy and macabre magic, so were looking at the Bela Lugosi of magic. Its worth checking the Lebanon magic circle company website. The inspirations section may spark a few ideas.
