Some invaluable information here for anyone who's starting out. I'd like to pick up on something that Big Al Jnr hit on and that's feedback.
Although not always possible with street magic, performing to a 'closed' audience should present you with the oportunity to gain feedback that can be used to alter your routine, direct your practice time to particular points or tricks etc.
If you're performing for free or at a very low rate as is the case with 'homes for the elderly' then the least that you can or should expect is some constructive feedback on your routine.
Just wanted to mention this as most seem to overlook the importance

It's not really an optical illusion - it just looks like one!
