Rubber Band Magic

Postby SlipperyPenguin » Sep 8th, '04, 16:24

Hi Guys..

As a side line to my cards I'd like to get into rubber band agic (seems fairly cool to me.. with an everyday object)

Can any of you recommend a good DVD or book which teaches all the techniques from the ground up (along with tricks of course) only I have no idea what to go for.

Thanks.

Go to Penguin Magic and buy the instant Download of Quantum Bandits AKA Crazy Man's Handcuffs, if you use the american site its cheaper about 5 bucks I think, at least that will get you started, the teaching vid you recieve is very good and easy to learn from.

I'm not into this rubber stuff yet (!) but Dan Harlan's Band Shark DVD, and Elastrix The Encyclopaedia of Rubber Band Magic seem to get good mentions from time to time. Michael's Ammar's Crazy Man's Handcuffs is another good 'un to think about. A Google search shows one or two others to take into consideration.

(I know Bananafish would have had some recommendations here as he's well into Rubber Band routines but he's off swanning around Canada at the moment!)

Ammar's Crazy Man's Handcuffs is SUPERB. I cannot find the words in my selective grammar school educated vocabulary to recommend it enough.

I have been 'succesful' with two ladies after showing them this routine... if you get what I'm saying.

However, buying CMH on its own may prove expensive, compared to the books and DVDs etc that are available that have it included as just one effect. Harlan's DVDs are something like £26 and his equivalent of CMH is on there, along with about ten other effects (I think). Better value to buy a DVD or the Ammar book with a collection of effects in.

The Magic of Michael Ammar - http://www.talkmagic.co.uk/ftopic3279.p ... hael+ammar - has a complete chapter on CMH so the rest of that book is almost a freebie!

(Hmmm. Success with the ladies sounds like an excellent reason for me to get into rubber. Where's that tin of talc?)

Crazy Man's Handcuffs is definitely a trick to know. Rubberbands can be found most anywhere, or, if you want to carry your own (to make sure you have the right size at hand and such), they take up little to no pocket space. CMH is also one of those effects that just kills the spectators. Mainly because it is so simple and disarming - rubberbands simply cannot do that!

This last weekend I was at the Houdini Days festival in Appleton, Wisconsin. I got into the close up tent early, so that I'd have a good seat (although, I sat second row from the front so that the laymen could get the best seats - that's only right). Just to make you guys' mouths water, the line up was John Stetson, Doc Eason, Bill Malone, Joshua Jay and Michael Ammar.

Anyway, Michael Ammar used me to hold the one rubberband when he did CMH. I gotta tell you, it was really impressive, and I do the trick all the time. Smooth, very very smooth. It really looked like magic and, again, I DO the trick!

On a side note, Pinnacle is pretty impressive too. Again, good impromptu because most any bands will work.

Mike.

Thanks everyone..

Just ordered the Dan Harlan DVD.. looks like that has quite a lot in it !
(And recommended by Bananafish)

See how I get on and then maybe follow some of your other ideas.

Thanks again for all your help.

Most appreciated.

Cool - I'd love to talk to you about the Dan Harlan's dvd when you get it. I'm thinking about getting it, but I already do a ton of rubber band stuff and i don't want to repeat a whole lot of what I already know.
The magic of Michael Ammar also has the broken and restored elastic band, as well as a linking headband trick which I use with rubber bands - so it's a really good deal :)

Of course there's also Pinnacle which is a really nice routine.

The secret to a succesful rain dance is all about timing
