Time Machine and Touches by Kenton Knepper.

The Effect: From the back of the DVD box...

A spectator seems to forget her own name. Next she feels some invisible touches on her head and arm in real time. No delays or bluffing!

Completely under the performers spell the spectator thinks of a time to travel to in a different country. She holds tightly to a coin from the US and of a more modern time and then goes into a trance...

When the spectator snaps out of her trance she is shocked to find she is holding a coin from the place she travelled to in her mind... and confirms the date on the coin is the exact year she imagined!

And the dealer blurb from the web site...

A Kenton Classic come to life in living color at last!

Filmed live in several locations...

Kenton's Original Time Machine effect was first revealed to performers in rare lectures and workshops. It became a staple (still is) of Kenton's performances. Time Machine finally made it's way into Wonder Words... but few performed it until NOW.

For the first time ever Kenton has allowed the filming of Time Machine in action.

What is "Kenton's Time Machine?"

Completely under the performer's spell, the spectator thinks of a time to travel to in a different country.

She holds tightly to a coin from the U.S. and a more modern time, and then goes into a trance...

When the spectator snaps out of her trance, she is shocked to find she is holding a coin from the place she traveled to in her mind ... and confirms the date on the coin is the exact year she imagined !

Finally, everything you need to know about this Kenton Klassic at last.

But that's not all.

Kenton also included his devious ways of apparently making his spectator forget their own name - sometimes twice in a row! Yes, you CAN do it. You'll see for yourself once you learn Kenton's sneaky secrets.

PLUS

Kenton shows additional "touches" he uses when he performs his Time Machine effect. This includes invisible touches on the arm and head - in real time. No delays, no stalling. This is as direct as can be. For those wondering how it would look and play in real life - see for yourself at last! These secrets are essentials in all of Kenton's trance illusion and "Kentonism" performances. Now they can be yours as well.

You get the name forgetting sequence, Kenton's original hypnosis coin illusion as designed for television, Kenton's "Touched in the Head" and "Heightened Arm Sensations" - with no gimmicks whatsoever, and Kenton's Time Machine with touches not even explained in Wonder Words... fully revealed for the first time on this DVD.

You will see Time Machine performed live, with additional details and bonus work explained too. It's everything you could want and more so you can properly learn this effect and its many related sub-effects, all on one DVD. See and learn it live - as if you were right there yourself.

Running Time Approximately 32min

Review

First of all some will consider £22 to be a bit much for a one trick DVD. Especially when you consider the whole thing does look like it was filmed and produced on the cheap. During the explanations you can hear an audience applauding something else going on in a near by room, I suspect that this was filmed during a convention or something like that.

But get passed the poor production quality and you will discover a trick that... well to be honest is a tad dissappointing. The spectator forgetting their name part is so blatently obvious it is no wonder it was left out of the YouTube demo videos for the product.

The time machine trick itself is just OK. I don't think the audience at the filming really responded in a strong way and the person helping on stage just looked slightly bemused by the whole experience. Also the blurb leads us to believe the spectator thinks of any country when in fact they don't and at no point would the audience think they freely chose a country either.

The value however in this DVD is in the "Touches" that Kenton passes on including a bonus effect in which a spectator is apparently put into a trance and they see a trick which the audience doesn't see but is entertaining to the audience because they see the reaction of the assistant who is convinced something magic just happened. It's hard to relay how good this is here without spoiling it.

Also in the touches section Kenton shows some killer work he has on Banacheks psychological touches which again is worth the cost of the DVD in my view. You will be able to a real time demonstration of psychological touching on someone at any time. Your audience will see you only mime the touch, they will describe you touching. This is strong stuff.

So if you buy this for the time machine effect... I don't know that you will consider you got the best value ever. However the touches he gives I think make the DVD worth buying.

Overall 7/10 - But I'd have given this an 8 if it was a little cheaper.

I have looked at the original time machine effect in Wonder Words. I don't think it would work in the UK because of the nature of the prop required. Has anyone in the UK used this successfully?

Sorry my first review. I have edited and added a link.

This is fairly new out. The effect was previously published in Wonder words as someone has pointed out but its now been put out on DVD in its own right. I notice Kenton has put out some other effects in the same format.

I don't think its too hard to alter the routine so it would work in the UK,but as I said in my review, I didn't think the main effect was that great, but the ideas and touches that could be incorporated into another routine are.

You'd need a little extra work in the story to explain the prop, of course, but I see no reason why it shouldn't work in the UK. I'd probably tie it in with the film version of 'The Time Machine', the 1960 one. There is a slight issue that I think a British person might raise, relating to the date chosen. I don't know why, but for some reason I think it more likely to occur to someone from this country, because they won't be taken in by the quaintness.

Oh, and Kenton explains how to deal with a major problem I had that stopped me performing this effect. I couldn't get a gimmick that was quite how he described on 'Wonder Words'. It seems he can't either, so tells you how to get round it.

I think the 'Touches' part of the DVD is probably what more people will find useful, but I like the other effect too. It's just not really worth the money, especially if you have the version in 'Wonder Words'.

Having watched the demo on YouTube it seems to me that this would work perfectly well, if not better, with ungimmicked coins (and a copy of Bobo).
