Hiding the 'source of all your power'

Postby MagicBell » Aug 29th, '08, 15:35

I'm talking books. Many of them.

I'm sure many members here have bookshelves, because we seem to be rather big readers in general.
So do you leave your magic books out where they can be seen?

Perhaps for me, because Im still starting out, I don't want people to know what I'm doing until I'm ready to show them. But even still, I wouldn't like to leave out the books, in plain view and accessible, which have the answers to all the tricks I show and techniques I use.

So do people hide their magic books?

I was wondering if I could perhaps find some false covers/sleeves to hide what the book is. Especially something such as the massive MWCCIM which has MAGIC down the spine in big colourful letters.

I need to find a solution for myself because they even need to be hidden from people in my house. As well as guests.

keep them under your mattress with all your 'magic' magazines
Oh wait.....we have t'interweb for that kind of thing these days. Actually, that should leave even more room under your mattress for books.

I can't put my books under my mattress however because it's already stuffed full of money!

I wondered how long it would take for one of these jokes. The answer was 'not long at all'.

My books are currently actually under my bed, but it's neither a good place to hide them, nor is it good for maintaining their condition, especially with all the other junk down there.

As for 'magazines'. Please. You'll have to take out the bottom drawer to find those

The bookshelf with most of the magic books on is right next to the door of my bedroom, when the door is open the bookshelf is hidden. No ones likely to poke around in it because my furniture is all arranged oddly. But on the whole nobody would be poking around in any of books. Most people who know me well enough to be in my bedroom know everything has an order to it which shouldn't be disturbed without permission.

I have mine on a book shelf in my study, I can remember someone picking one up to have a read (Welsey James' - Enchantments i think) and simply looking confused then asking what a "phalange" was. I see no need to hide things like this, is someone wants to learn something from them they have to put a bit of time in, if they're willing to do that then they deserve to know.
Anything that immediately gives a trick away (gimmicks and trick decks) stay in a drawer though.

Nice topic idea......

I have mine in my study also...... I agree anyone who tends to look at that direction just enhances what i do to them lol, besdies there are few pictures in my books so have no worries about family etc reading them.
HOwever the kids like to flick through them sometimes which is a chuckle....

But as im a bit obsessive i keep all my bits and bobs that reveal things in boxes, dvd stacking boxes so i instantly know where things are (i must have order lol), all arranged by category lol.........

Oh dear.............

I have a trunk with bins divided into different areas of magic that I keep my books in.

Barton: Have you read the Bible, Pete?
Pete: Holy Bible?
Barton: Yeah.
Pete: Yeah, I think so. Anyway, I've heard about it.

My wife and I have so many books we have run out of room. Most of my magic books are in large rubber containers out in one of our garages. The ones I am currently working on, or the ones that I like to have on hand are on bookshelves in the bedroom.

Hmmm...

So no-one else feels the need to disguise them or anything?

I can understand how advanced books may make no sense at all to the layman, but beginner books reveal all.

It's not that I expect people to be snooping around, but I like to eliminate the possibilities.

How many do you have?

If you have other non-magic books, than you could, if your that worried about it, put dust covers of other books over those ones.

That's just what I thought of when you said that. Or you could put them in a box under your bed, no joke.

Barton: Have you read the Bible, Pete?
Pete: Holy Bible?
Barton: Yeah.
Pete: Yeah, I think so. Anyway, I've heard about it.

I never really liked the idea of having mine out either. We keep about 10 bookshelves filled with non-magic books so many of our guests like to poke about and browse through our collection.

My solution (after wrestling with the same ideas you've had) was to clear a closet and put a new bookshelf inside to hold my magic books. The closet has a door so I close it when I'm not working with the books - keeps them away from guests and safer than out in the open. This eliminates the need for false fronts or sleeves which 1/make it difficult to find what you have and 2/ would look rather silly if someone ended up discovering them anyway.

If you were that bothered you could make like you're back in school and make your own covers out of wallpaper or what ever we used to do to protect the books.

I personally have them on a book case in my spare room and no one is that nosey to lift them up and start looking but good luck to them if they do I'll happily point them the way of the royal road if they're that interested.
