LIVING MARIONETTES

Postby Allen Tipton » Aug 29th, '08, 16:41

:D Does anyone have any idea of who originated these? A Puppet's Head attached to a human body. The human head sticks through a slit in the backcloth and the small hands & feet are operated by rods.

The most recent use was in the children's TV show Dick & Dom.

Bill Stickland described the fit up and how to operate the show in his book IBM --Introducing Bill's Magic (Supreme). Thanks Dale for giving me the correct title. Alas my copy was borrowed never to return. How many times have YOU heard THAT story?

I first came across the rig in Wm Bagley's little book One Man Show in my 1947 schooldays.

I have traced the fit up so far to a 1908 performance in Australia and a French Magician friend discovered that 2 frenchmen were performing Living Marionettes in the 19th. Century.

In the Appendix to Prof. Hoffman's Modern Magic he describes, with an illustration how Dr. Lynn, the famous magician (I think conman) performed them. Dr. Lynn, in a newspaper advert, claimed them as an original performance around the 1880's. .
The 2 Frenchmen pre dated him.

Any ideas guys please.

Thanks for the Bill Stickland IBM I thought :? it was IT? :)

Did think about the Will Ayling book which I'd always intended to send for years ago to Supreme but never did.
