Hello From Australia / About me ect

Postby royale » Aug 28th, '08, 09:43

Hi all,
I'm glad to have joined this great forum.
My real name is Paul and Iv'e lately become very interested in Metalism, psychological magic and thought inducing performace art. I have been into magic for some 17 yrs now.
I met with the international brotherhood of magicians every week for about a year when I was 14 / 15 being the youngest member at the time.

I miss hanging out with other magicians and thought provoking people teribly as there are no other active close up / mentalists in my town that I am aware of.

I've done paid gigs on a number of ocasions and have performed to around 250 people at the bigest performance I have done.

Currently I have an oportunity to work as a close up magician at a local Club venue that pays nicely as the previous magician had to move on last year.

I did a test run a few months back with some basic card magic and a few coin effects to see If I was up to the challenge before I negotiate with management and It went very well indeed.
Everyone was convinced that I was the new Magician and comented that "the new guy is awsome" Iv'e never seen jaws drop so low and had so many people thank me for the excitement it all caused.

I preffer effects were you don't seem like your big noting yourself on how good you are but rather seem like your watching the magic happen.
I have a terrible problem of talking the magic down afterwards if I feel like my audience has fallen over to hard into non reality and are overly impressed.
Any idea's how I can change this distructive habit ?

I just need a small push of inspiration now and a clear head to go make a childhood dream come true ! > Regular Well paid work as a Magician

Unfortunatly my recent crush on mentalism has me in a bind as to if I should do close up eye candy type stuff or go with what im currently getting into ?
Any advice from the small amount of information I have given would be most welcome.

Magically yours

It's nice when new members take the time to make a full proper introduction and tell us a little about themselves.
- says I who did the same myself.

I don't understand your question about mentalism. I see no reason why you can't do both magic and mentalism, both close-up and for an audience. Whatever the occasion calls for.
You can plan some routines for an audience and then have other effects for the impromptu showing.

I don't think an audience/spectator will know the difference between magic and mentalism anyway. They'll just be knocked out of their seats.

But you're way ahead of me, so there's little advice I can offer you. Just keep enjoying it!

Thanks for making me feel welcome,
I'm going to stick with some eye candy, and experiment on the side with mental magic effects for the people that may ask to see something diffrent.

My thinking was that genrally, I have found younger crowds to respond better to visual magic.

Mental magic if not presented in a simple easy to follow format can leave the audience just feeling confused as to what happend and why they should be impressed.
I need more experience with mental magic presentation skills.

Any recomendations on books ect ? that focus on the psychological mindset the spectators need to be in to apreciate and invite mental magic effects would be great.
