Appearing pole maintainence

Postby Gagsy » Aug 31st, '08, 22:06

I have an (as yet) unused appearing 8 foot pole, and a second hand appearing ladder from briefcase, unfortunately both these items have been kept in their rolled up unproduced states for far too long, and as such when produced do not form solid poles.
Anyone have any hints and tips on how to get these appearing items to re-aquire their optimal fully appeared states...?

Five minutes watching Carol Vorderman on Countdown usually does the trick for me.

I'm so sorry, I simply could not resist.

I would overtighten and tape up one end, in the overtightened position. That's regards the pole. Maybe I havn't explained that well.
The pole try's to extend, but doesn't very well. Wring it like you would when drying out a towel (twisting it, in the way it wants to extend. But do it slightly more than it would be in it's usual extended position. So the internal diameter is smaller than it would be usually, when extended. Tape one end to hold it in place, twist it all the way down and tape it as you go. Then leave it for a while, a week?. This should counter the effect of it being kept unextended.
I understand how this effect works, but do not own one. I do not profess to have the answer, but do believe this would work. Be aware of cracks in the plastic, so don't go "overboard."

jason thats fine for canes, though close to exposure, but not poles which were possible should be kept extended.
for your pole clip a weight at one end and clip the pther end to a banister unless you happen to have a nail 8ft in the air  , the object is to have it fully extended but flat if you catch my drift.

See your point. I was actually referring to it being in the exteded form, and countering (i.e. doing the opposite) of what it had "learned," the memory that it had picked up from not being in the finished position for the effect. See what yuo are saying about it flat, as that is achieving just that.

Or you can get an 8 foot 2X4 piece of wood and tape each end of the can to each end the wood and then leave it for a couple of days.

If it's an 8 ft pole, are you not going to need a longer bit of wood?

Just leave them open for a day or two and it will reform.

In between gigs I store my 8ft poles in the garage in the open state, that way when I roll it down it finds its shape very quickly when opened up again.

I dont have these, but assume they work similarly to appearing wands?
Mine are all stored rolled.
I never thought about storing them in their open state, should I?

Appearing wands, poles or spring flowers etc, should all be stored "open."

Vanishing wands should be stored "closed."

Easy way to remember is they have to be stored how they FINALLY appear during the show.

If stored rolled, they need some extra persuading to extend them. You may find an 8' pole, (which is normally only about 6' or so.) will only extend about 4'. This is because it is more likely to stay the way it has been stored.
Imagine if you curled yourself nto a tight ball for a while. Your muscles would get tight and it would take you a while to straighten out.

Oh dear, I'm sure some of this thread will end up in the Doves Head, what with talking about what we do with our poles.

Ahhh, it makes sense that the new shipment I recieved seemed to slowly unroll as opposed to the quick magical unfurling.

Thanks for that Darrel. Any tips on which is the best way to roll, ie, with the black/wand tips on the outermost side of the roll or the inner side? I have experimented with both ways, but there doesnt seem to be a difference.

Not quite sure what your meaning here... can you explain in a different way?

Prior to performance, the wands are to be wound and secured.

It can be rolled up with the black on the outside, or reversing its natural curl, with the silver (inner part of the wand) on the outside.

I would assume, that for maximum springiness, its to be rolled with the silver on the outer, thus reversing its natural curl, but if the items are to be stored in their 'open' position, then perhaps going against its nature isnt the best way...

Hope that clears it up a bit.

I would never do that with the poles i use. I think it would ruin the structure of the pole.

The best way to keep them after having experience with appearing poles for 8 years is to just leave them unrolled for as much time as possible. I have a rack in my garage which keeps all my polesout of the way but still unrolled.

Just leave them like that and you wond have any problems whatsoever
