Making a trick

Postby Jean » Sep 10th, '08, 17:25

I have an idea for a magic trick that requires a specially made gimmick. Can anyone give me directions to contacting magic trick designers with a knack for metalwork, or if there is a thread or post out there more helpful to my line of enquiry can you direct me to it? I am currantly based in leeds.

Best thing to do is contact some engineering workshops in your area.

The first thing you need to do is make absolutely certain nobody has thought of this before you. Confide in someone well versed in the type of magic you're dealing with.

I'm actually thinking of making a small amount of this gimmick and using it exclusively for now and I've looked around and not found any thing similar but thanks for the advice i will look into it as i may sell the trick later on.
And thank you tony for the advice as well. i'll look for an engernering workshop as i see you've made a trick with metal objects.

Both of the previous replies are on mark; do the leg work first so that you know that you aren't stepping on the brain-child of some other working stiff. Sadly, magic is full of brilliant minds that come up with the same or very similar things with great frequency.

Secondly, I'd track down some of the teaching staff at local tech-schools and see if you couldn't find a couple of students looking for a special "start to finish" product development type project; one will do the technical drawings of the device with another doing the actual fabrication, you serving as the conceptionalist and guide or "overseer" to the project along with the teachers.

I know of many a mage and theatrical production teams that have used Trade Schools as well as the Art & Shop departments of the local high schools to get things made on the cheap. In my experience it's a great way of getting your prototypes up and running. But it's all for not if you've not done the footwork and checked in with a handful of historians and technical experts that may know if or not your design is unique.

Hi Jean personally I would just make the gimmick work out the trick and show it to members of your local magic community. You will then get feedback if the idea is in use at this moment in time or has been used in the past. Then take advice from there on where to take it.

It’s impossible to know every gimmick out there being used and to know how they all work.

Hope this helps take care
