Royal Road Study Guide Enough interested to bother?

Postby Lenoir » Sep 23rd, '08, 19:27

Hello there!

I have started to put together a study guide of the Royal Road to card magic. A word document for now but can easily be pasted into the forum.

It is similar in style to Michael Jay's Bobo guide, just amount the Royal Road. Chapter by chapter.

Is there anybody honestly interested? Will anyone find use for such a thing? I really won't be offended if the anwsers are no!

I studied RRTCM for about 2 years, and then went over it again so I would like to say I relatively intune with it!

I'd say that just about anyone interested in card work would be happy to read your study guide. RRTCM is not the easiest of books to get though so any help is welcome!

Honestly, I think the best guide is to start at the front and go all the way through. I don't mean this to sound flippant and I'd certainly have a read of your guide if you did one but I don't personally see a need for it. In contrast, brilliant though it is, Bobo's jumps around all over the place and a study guide helps to put some structure to it. I suppose it would be useful to highlight areas where the instructions were incorrect or where modern handling to some of the methods have been developed. Just my two penneth worth and I hope this doesn't sound too negative....

Obviously I couldn't guarantee to find any use in your guide until I'd read it, but as someone starting out on Royal Road, it is something that interests me.

If it worked as a support for the main text, ie. not too heavy on the material and clear as to where in the book you are, then I imagine it could be very useful indeed.

Good point Cragglecat!

I was more thinking along the lines of the annotated Erdnase style from Ortiz. I am in no way comparing myself to him or the great addition he created, just merely an idea.

Specific time boundaries, things I thought could have been explained better, and maybe further reading sources for certain moves/effects,

Considering the amount of people who are asking in this forum for a "book to start with cards" and are directed to RRTCM and then including the amount of people who come back to find out how to approach the book I'd say: Brilliant idea!

I especially like the thought of adding "further reading sources". There is a lot of potential here waiting to be unleashed. Maybe some more illustrations might be helpful too as those in the book are sometimes rather vague.
In 2006 there has been a study guide to RRTCM on some podcast called "Go Magic Go". I don't know how they did it though or if it is of any use at all.

I can offer nothing but support for your idea Lennoir!

When I was learning the Royal Road I'd convinced myself that I wasn't doing a lot of the sleights correctly, and I would grill other magicians for advice.
Yes I agree the Royal Road would be very hard to improve. But a set of practical annotations would have been most helpful to me, especially an electronic one which may even include links to clips of experienced magicians performing the moves for real.

Good luck with it.

There probably is one Dale, thanks for bringing it to my attention!

I will definately post the first section tonight. Even if there is another available somewhere!

Actually, on reflection, something that did this would be very helpful.
