IBM Ring 148

Postby Dragon74 » Sep 23rd, '08, 01:59

Hey there,

Im going to my first magic meeting tomorrow night, with a view to joining IBM and am wondering what to expect, take, do?

Any hints, suggestions, advice would be greatly appreciated.

Do I go in there with all my best tricks? Do I take a sucker trick I can explain?
Can I film other magicians on my mobile phone?

I have absolutely no experience with the IBM. However I suspect it would be considered bad ettiquette to film another magician while he or she was performing, unless it was an impromptu performance in a pub or somewhere.

Secondly the magicians present will be familiar with the mechanics of every effect known to man. If you are auditioning to join, It's not a case of trying to fool them but to entertain them and show off your commitment to the art.

Take something small that you are good at. If it were me trying to join, I'd take a deck of cards, and nothing else. Oh well perhaps my ID.

Thanks for that Marvo, particularly this bit ...familiar with the mechanics of every effect known to man...

Im thinking of the pink silk to panties routine. Even though its a simple TT trick, the outcome is quite unexpected.

You're welcome Dragon74.
I'm supposing a lot here, since I'm speaking from the time I enquired about joining the Newcastle Magic Circle (I didn't in the end).

I was told all about the audition and what would be expected of me. I was told that I all I had to do was show my competence and dedication to the art since I would not be going there to fool anybody. I suppose it's a way to weed out all of the cretins who just want to learn secrets.
Your silk production sounds just the ticket, good luck with it all.

i would say that the execution and routining of such a well known effect, has got to be of the highest standard possible, in order to impress any magician.
please make sure that you have devoted a huge amount of time in working out the patter, and timing of it.Not just the technical elements.

Also, if your ring is like others, you will need to show good technical, and historical knolwedge of magic.

Hey Guys, had an awesome night, there were a few working magicians there, which is always good. Several people did a few tricks, one guy had an audition, I even got up and did the silk to panties which went down real well, especially as the guy I chose REALLY concentrated, and that was what he was thinking about.

Dale, you're right about the patter, because, even though I did see how most of the tricks were done, technically, their manner was so good, that it didnt matter.

Cant wait till the next meet!
