Talent Agents Wanted

Postby TylerMason » Sep 24th, '08, 13:26

Does anyone here know of a reputable and productive talent agent who casts close-up magicians / mentalists for events such as hotels, festivals, holiday parks, cruise ships, corporate shows, promotional events, club openings etc, etc.

I have done the standard googling searches, and have been over blown with offers that apparantly guarantee to make you a star (Im sure you've all seen similar ads)

But I was wondering if anyone can recommend an agency that has actually worked out well for them. Any details would be greatly apreciated. Don't get me wrong, it's fine to do pubs and restuarants etc....but I'm having trouble filling the hours these days, and I just assumed that if I had an agent, I might finally get a chance to do more paid performances, without the hassle of finding gigs myself.

Please feel free to offer any additional advice or tips you may think would be useful when searching for a suitable agent. Thank you all for your time. Tyler.

Be your own agent. Most agents these days are a website and a phone. They won't "chase" work for you. They wait for the phone to ring or an email to arrive. Far better to do that yourself AND chase/source your own work.

That's my experience anyway!

Slightly off topic but there was a great quote on Teletext today:
Definiton of a TV Celebrity - someone who's IQ is lower than their agent's!

I work through many agents, but mainly through three.

DO NOT rely on an agent for the work though. Id say only 30% of my work comes through an agent. Make sure you can manage your own. Create a business model, get contracts drawn up, terms and conditions etc etc and base your focus on working for yourself.

Then just be happy when you get work from an agent every now and then!!
